Will consider re-joining when more time available. • Bookfair profit $12,700.00. Tony offered advice on keeping the club active and moving forward as well as ways to consider increasing our membership.

Simon spent his early years in Belmont, Petone and Lower Hutt, being educated at Belmont Primary, Wilford and Waterloo Schools prior to Hutt Intermediate and then Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College.
Simon's grandparents died when he was at College and from that point he knew that the funeral profession was where he wanted to be. Simon managed to obtain a part time position with a company in Wellington and upon leaving school started permanently with that company.
After 9 years with that company, in 1989, he decided to open Harbour City Funeral Home. Simon is a qualified embalmer and funeral director, and has taken on roles to encourage and train people who like himself choose the funeral directing role to serve others.
Within the funeral world Simon is leads the New Zealand Funeral Directors response in disaster situations. This specialist work has seen Simon deployed in Nauru, Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, and The Netherlands.
Simon is a keen Rotarian and has taken on various roles within Rotary including the role of District Governor for the Lower North Island. Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self, fits well with who Simon is.
Simon mixes his time between Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast, anyone who knows Simon, knows he loves his role as a funeral director. Making a difference and helping others is what it is all about for Simon.
Rotary Club of Tawa – President Nominee Recently the Nominating Committee of the Club has met to select a President Nominee for the year 2021-22. This process has been unsuccessful in having the desired outcome. Consequently the Board has decided to open the process up to the whole club and to call fro nominations from the floor. This will take place at our AGM which has been notified for December 10th 2019. Please see the process below and start considering who you may wish to nominate or if you would wish to be nominated or volunteer for the role yourself. Either method follows our club’s Rules and Bylaws. Please Note: If we are unsuccessful in having a person ready and willing to accept this role the consequence may in fact by dire for Tawa Rotary Club. In other words it may mean the end of the existence of our club. Selection of President Nominee 1. Any Tawa Rotary Club member may self-nominate or nominate others 2. Nominations should be sent to the Secretary by (date to be added) 3. The President, in consultation with Past Presidents and the President-elect, should review the nominations and select a preferred person 4. The proposed person should be contacted to confirm their willingness to proceed. 5. The proposed President Nominee will be presented to the Tawa Rotary Club AGM in early December. We would like our President nominee to have the following qualities: • A committed member of Tawa Rotary Club • Energy and enthusiasm for the role of President as leader of a volunteer team • Innovative and forward looking • Able to manage the role alongside work and other commitments • A networker who respects different views and seeks to unify • Experienced in leading in a community group/ governance setting, and ideally with Rotary Club Committee or Project lead experience • Articulate and organised • Able to inspire and engage Tawa Rotary Clubs membership.
If you would like to understand more about practicalities such as elements of the role, and time commitments, you are welcome to talk with current or past presidents. Keep in mind that while this is a demanding role, it is rewarding and there is room for flexibility and a team to back you up.

Back by popular demand is the “Pot Luck Progressive Dinner” on Saturday 14th December 2019, from 6.30pm – I hope you will discuss with your social secretary whether this will be ‘the Christmas event’ for you for 2019. To refresh your memories and as the name suggests, it is pot luck. That means attendees do the cooking and keep us all guessing! And also ‘progressive’ in the name suggests attendees are on the move, in other words go from house to house. So to outline the event, there will be three homes for entrees, three homes for mains, and then a central home for desert and coffee.
Rotary Day at the United Nations, which we celebrate each November, is an important reminder of the historic relationship between our organizations. But this year’s event is even more important than usual, because we are building up to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in June 2020.
You might ask, why celebrate this anniversary? For Rotary, it is entirely appropriate, because we played such a critical leadership role in the San Francisco Conference that formed the United Nations in 1945. Throughout World War II, Rotary published materials about the importance of forming such an organization to preserve world peace.
