TAWA RSA COMMUNITY CLUB
(Phil Harland hopes to have his 93rd Birthday on 18 Dec. 2019 but would like you to consider the following) Having a Birthday a week before Christmas is a mixed blessing, so I am tempting fate by asking all Tawa Rotary Members and Partners to join me for a Birthday drink and nibbles at the Tawa RSA Community Club from, 5.30 on Friday 22nd November 2019, at 89 Oxford Street, Tawa. Anyone can visit the Tawa RSA Bar and facilities but are required to sign a visitors’ book (a liquor Licence Requirement) and anyone can join the Tawa RSA Community Club as an Associate Member at $45 per year and support the Club and no need to sign in.
Melbourne Cup Night - Plimmerton Rotary Tuesday 05 November
As with previous years, we have been invited to the Plimmerton Rotary Club. Since the race starts at 5.00 pm (NZ time ) and you want to participate in the sweepstake, you will need to arrive at the Cruising Club as early as possible and certainly by 4.30 pm . The evening is a partners' night and they again have some fantastic prizes for the most ‘Fascinating Fascinator' as well as for the ‘Best Dressed Male’. I am sure we will have a good representation at the Cruising Club to join in the atmosphere. Dinner will be served probably about 6.00 pm and I am sure it will again be an evening with a lot of fun, so put it in your diary - Tuesday 5th November, Melbourne Cup Evening.
This week our Community Services Director - Allister McDonald has provided us an update:
Community service is essentially about Rotarians finding ways to help improve the well-being of people in our own communities and also those around the world (including New Zealand and the Pacific). Activities can include fund raising, practical assistance (e.g. financial, physical, mentorship etc), environmental (e.g. hanging baskets, working bees etc), and many other positive actions.
Assessing our community’s strengths, weaknesses, needs, and assets is fundamental to the process. By spending time learning about and interacting with our community, enables us can identify opportunities for service and maximise our club’s ability to make a difference.
Some of the great initiatives that our club has been involved with over the last 12 months are: Toot for Tucker, Stuff the Trailers, Book Fair with much of the proceeds going to Life Education Trust, collecting for numerous charities, hanging baskets in the town centre, Tawa lookout clean up, dress making for children in the Solomon Islands, helping Foster Hope, and the Rotary world polio day collection.

Back by popular demand is the “Pot Luck Progressive Dinner” on Saturday 14th December 2019, from 6.30pm – I hope you will discuss with your social secretary whether this will be ‘the Christmas event’ for you for 2019. To refresh your memories and as the name suggests, it is pot luck. That means attendees do the cooking and keep us all guessing! And also ‘progressive’ in the name suggests attendees are on the move, in other words go from house to house. So to outline the event, there will be three homes for entrees, three homes for mains, and then a central home for desert and coffee.
Rotary Day at the United Nations, which we celebrate each November, is an important reminder of the historic relationship between our organizations. But this year’s event is even more important than usual, because we are building up to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in June 2020.
You might ask, why celebrate this anniversary? For Rotary, it is entirely appropriate, because we played such a critical leadership role in the San Francisco Conference that formed the United Nations in 1945. Throughout World War II, Rotary published materials about the importance of forming such an organization to preserve world peace.
Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for both community service and friendship. Becoming a Rotarian connects you with a diverse group of professionals who share your drive to give back.
