15th March 2019

March 15th 2019 will go down in the history of New Zealand as when we realised we are not as far away from terrorist violence as we might have thought, and may not be a country free of racism and bigotry as we might have thought.    But as history has said - it can sometimes take a tragic event to trigger a wake-up call and challenge us to think about our own attitudes.   Let's start by showing more peace, love and community for our fellow neighbours, after all we are all belong to the one human race.

Tawa Rotary board members Denise and Richard were humbled to be present at an historic event on Sunday - for the first time the Horouta Marae in Porirua was totally packed with more Muslims than Maori, and with community leaders (including a few invited Rotarian's).

We were honoured to be able to show our support to the Muslim Community as they grieve for dead and injured, family and friends in Christchurch.   The emotional speech by Porirua Major Mike Tana - summed up all our inability to comprehend the tragedy as those children are our children, our sisters and brothers, our mothers and fathers.   That New Zealanders totally accept cultural and religious diversity, and we want friendship and peace for all.

Heartfelt Thanks to the organisers, President Dai and committee members from the Porirua Multicultural Council, the Horouta Marae whanau, and Porirua City Council.

12th March 2019 - Human Trafficking

Last week our speaker was Katie Knowles, Operations Manager at MBIE, speaking on the topic of "Modern slavery, human trafficking and exploitation in New Zealand".

It mightn’t be easy to associate modern day slavery and human trafficking with New Zealand, but, in fact, both are a reality in New Zealand.   Human trafficking is the third largest form of organised crime internationally.    And while many will relate human trafficking and slavery to women destined for the sex industry, at least in New Zealand that is not so much the case as it is for men lured to NZ with the promise of work that proves not to live up to expectations.
Katie explained what defines human trafficking and the difference between trafficking and slavery, and also described recent cases that have been brought to the courts on exploitation.   So far there has been only one successful case conviction for trafficking in New Zealand, but it's more common than you may think and is prevalent across a wide range of industry groups, including horticultural, construction, and hospitality.

Also this evening we had the honour of welcoming Karyn Meade and husband Kevin Walker, as the newest members of Rotary Tawa.  Karyn and Kevin are also currently hosting out RYE Inbound student Olivia and Karyn's daughter is currently in Canada as our Outbound RYE student.   So you've probably seen them around at previous meetings, but please make them feel welcome.

Member Mark Carol provided an update on his and New Zealander's passion on sport during his 3-minute talk.

OTHER RECENT EVENTS:

The WCC Tawa Plaza project completion opening event.

Thank you for those who volunteered to help out at the Plaza opening party last Friday.    This is what Stacey (Vibrant Tawa) had to say on the event ....
It was a great night with lots of people and fun happening - which seems strange now as the true magnitude of the horror in Christchurch becomes clear.  But this is exactly why community is so important... communities that know and understand each other and spend time together are places of love, light, peace and tolerance. Thanks to everyone who came down to make it an amazing event and thanks to the amazing Tawa community - for being one of love, kindness and connection.

Presidential Message March 2019

President 2018-19 Barry Rassin

Barry Rassin President 2018-19

One of the things I appreciate most about serving as president of Rotary International is the people I get to meet.   Much of my time is spent traveling and visiting Rotary clubs around the world.   A Rotarian welcome is something quite special.   But let me tell you, there's nothing so warm as the welcomes that have been rolled out for me by Rotaractors.   These are young people who are committed to Rotary ideals, who are pouring their hearts into service, and who, in the process, don't forget to have fun.

One of the highlights of my recent travels was a trip to Ghana, where I visited a district that boasts some 60 Rotaract clubs.   They aren't satisfied with that number, though — in fact, they're excited about a plan to double it.   They'll do it, too.

Rotaractors are vaccinating children against polio.   They're donating blood where the supply is dangerously low.   They're providing hand washing facilities to schools where children previously had no way to get clean.   In short, they're all about transformational service: carrying out projects that make a real difference in their communities.       >>>>
