I hope you have all had a good week. Mine has been exciting and I will ‘fill you in’ on my return from the NZ Bakels Pie Awards next week. Thank you to Past president Denise who will be running the meeting for this week July 30^th – Guest Speaker Nicola Turner from Enliven

August 6^th Tawa Rotary Barside Meeting
This is an old/new initiative that I am bringing to our club. Since joining the club in 2016 I have heard many members talk about Fireside Meetings that used to take place in Rotarians homes. A time to discuss projects, learn about Rotary, learn about each other and to socialise. I look around our club often after dinner and see people chatting and enjoying each others company. I have therefore come up with a way to bring that back while at the same time achieving our sense of purpose in belonging to a Rotary Club.

The format for the evening will be as follows (note – flexibility is the key):
5.45pm Start with socialising
6.15pm Welcome and Starting Thought
6.20pm Dinner and fellowship – this may be our usual catered dinner or it may be a casual takeaway
7.00pm Committee Meetings – this allows a time for committees who wish to meet to do so without involving another time commitment during our busy lives. If you don’t need to meet with a particular committee then perhaps jump in and see where you might help others or hear about what they are doing. Have a coffee and enjoy the time.
7.30pm Board Meeting commence.

During my presentation outlining the objectives for this Rotary year, I challenged all members to come to a Board meeting sometime and see how the club is managed. Feel free to stay on and be part of the Board Meeting. Obviously if there is an item the Board needs to discuss ‘in committee’ they will ask you to depart at that time.

I hope members will embrace the opportunity to try something a bit different and see how it works. We may not always meet at the Bowling Club for drinks and dinner – we could sometimes start at one of the local bars or restaurants. Lets just see what happens.

Apology for leaving Russell Smiths name off the 50^th Anniversary Committee. VERY much a part of that Committee, Russell. Again my apologies.

Fellowship from 5:45pm, Dinner, Updates and our guest speaker is Nicola Turner from Enliven. Nicola, will be talking to us about aged care and then sharing with us opportunities where our Rotary Club may be able to assist with projects at Longview Resthome.

Notice: Our thoughts are with Karyn, Kevin and Jordyn with the passing away of Karyn's mother Lesley Meade. We enjoyed having Lesley attend our meetings, she was always supportive of our youth activities and keen to hear how everybody was going. Lesley's funeral service is being held at 2:00pm at the Whenua Tapu Crematorium this Wednesday 31July.

DISTRICT INTERACT DAY

When: Sunday the 4th August
Time: 9.30am - 3.30pm
Where: Ōtaki College, Mill Road, Ōtaki

FINAL REMINDER - Rotary Learning Institute 101 - Venue Tawa Fire Station Sunday 04 August 9:30am - 1:30pm

The Board has agreed to sponsor / fund club members attending this fantastic Rotary Programme, what a great opportunity to learn about Rotary and all the opportunities it has to offer, (in TAWA too) for those members wishing to attend please make contact with President Judith. Hurry - I have heard the course is filling fast.

The next course is 18th August in New Plymouth followed by Wairarapa on the 8th of September.

Vocational Director Update - Don Rushworth

Thank you to Don Rushworth, our clubs Vocational Director who has put together the material for our upcoming Pride in Work Awards, November 12th 2019. Please take the opportunity to promote this initiative to friends and family who may, having a business in Tawa, wish to acknowledge an employee for their dedication and the Pride in their Work and therefor nominate them for an Award.

Last Week:

Main speaker - Nathan Bezzant and Sophie Opie from the Tawa Salvation Army provided us an informative and great update.

It was was intersting to hear the challenges they have in meeting our community needs, they also spoke on the youth activities they run and the difference they make on a local basis. President Judith, with Inner Wheel President Carolyn presented Nathan a cheque for $1000.00 the proceeds from the "Inner Wheel Project" STUFF THE TRAILER.

I love to travel! I even enjoy the mundane process of getting from here to there. But last year, my wife, Gay, and I had one of those experiences that would strain the optimism of even the most cheerful traveler. We found ourselves with six hours to wait, at an airport where we were not scheduled to be, on a day we had not planned still to be traveling, having woken up that morning at a hotel unknown to us the night before. It was one of those days.

As we waited at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Gay and I took a walk to people watch. We went from one end of the terminal to the other and back, looking at every gate, every destination, every group of people waiting for their flights.
