NEXT WEEKS EVENTS

Note that for Tuesday 5th June we are NOT meeting as usual at the Bowling Club. We are having an evening out at the movies as a fundrasier event. The 6 p.m. screening of "The Bookshop" at The Lighthouse Pauatahanui. Please try and arrive by 5.45 p.m. to allow for seating on time - earlier if you wish to order any food or drinks from to movie cafe. Tickets are $20pp. Payment should be made to Liz Sutton or to the Club Bank Account - if paying by internet banking please included your name and movie as reference.

There are a few seats remaining - Please let Liz Sutton know if you require additional seats.

The fundraising in this case is to support an international project that locally is being co-ordinated by Plimmerton Club for the outfitting of new classrooms for the Belola Prep-School & Kindergarten, in the Bobonaro area of Timor Leste.

Upcoming Working Bees - Saturday 9th June

Also please note the following proposed working-bee outings for Saturday 9th June and schedule your diary for these.

In the morning from 10 a.m. - midday the Book Fair trays and trestles are to be transferred from the Plimmerton Rotary lockup. A good turnout please to help unload and position the trays and trestles in the New World Tawa shop. Meet initially at the roll-up door on the norther side of New Work Tawa at 10 a.m.

And in the afternoon from 2 p.m., about 6 people are required to help with next changeover of the Tawa Business Centre hanging flower baskets. We will initially load up from the Fire station and then to the Main Road.

Upcoming Working Bees - Sunday 10th June

Tree planting opportunity with FOTBR and members of Port Nicholson Rotary from 1.30 p.m. - 4.30 p.m. 500 trees planned to be planted in Woodburn Reserve. Park on Bing Lucas Drive and walk up private ROW to reserve entrance at 66A Bing Lucas Drive. Help contibute to the planting a tree for every Rotarian goal.

Foster Hope – Winter pyjamas and slippers are the current focus. See Liz for more information.

Nick and Christine Hurley

At our meeting on 29 May as speakers we had the pleasure of two notable Rotarians, Kick and Christine Hurley both members of the Rotary Club of Wellington who brought with them a wealth of knowledge about Rotary activity in the Pacific. Their background experience in the NZ Public and Diplomatic service provided a base for their Rotary achievements.(see Read More for Curriculum Vitae for Nick and Christine)

Nick spoke about his activity as a Rotarian as a diplomat in the Pacific and in retirement since 2014, Nick has continued to be involved with rotary projects in the Pacific and is Chairman of a Rotary District Committee concerned with the Pacific. Clubs are helped to identify where assistance is needed such as in water supply, education and health an example was the provision of a mobile health clinic.

Nick described how MFAT cooperated with Rotary such as for the distribution of emergency kits following Pacific Island disaster, also the distribution of books. Clubs can assist by raising funds $600 for the emergency kits.

Christine was also involved in overseas diplomatic postings initially including Tehran, Geneva and Brussels and later with Nick in Samoa and Rarotonga. Christine spoke to us about her work on the steering group of the Australasian Centenary Immunisation Program, 2018-2021. This project is to recognise 100 years of Rotary in Australasia and in cooperation with UNICEF is aiming to reach 100,000 disadvantaged babies and children during the next four years. The vaccinations are intended to prevent diseases including cervical cancer, severe diarrhoea, blood infections and meningitis. Christine passed out an information sheet about the immunisation project but this also includes an invitation for all Rotary clubs in Oceania to commemorate 100 years of Rotary in Australasia by providing stories about our Clubs.
