Thanks to those who turned out to help with the Book Fair and clean up - we did very well for the first weekend.  Did we break our record - details will be announced on Tuesday.
 
This Tuesday, 24th July our speaker is David Shanks, Chief Censor, who is speaking to us on the topic of "Meet the Chief Censor, the work of the Office and future direction".   
 
David has been Chief Censor since May 2017.  His career has spanned senior leadership and legal positions in both the public and private sectors.

Report on our meeting of Tuesday 17th July 2018
 
Congratulations to Laura for her win of the New World Tawa raffle.
 
We heard from club speaker, Judith Havill, on her interest in sewing dresses for “Dress a girl around the World” (http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com/).   This arose from an interest Judith had in patch work and an inspirational lady who leads the NZ involvement in this international organisation.   “Dress a girl around the World” believe that every girl should have at least one nice dress, and through this may show that someone cares about her and thus reduce the risk of her being preyed upon by predators in the sex trade industry of Asian and African countries.   See https://www.facebook.com/dressagirlaroundtheworldnz/  for more information on the NZ activities.
 
Our main speaker was Liz Koh, Vocational Service Chair for District 9940 (from Kapiti Club).   Liz presented about the 9940 Vocational initiatives.

Book Fair Photos 2018
The Tawa Rotary monster book fair was held over two weekends 14/15 and 21/22 July.   It was very successful and came very close to matching the record takings of last year.
 
It is estimated that roughly 15,000 books were sold, and surprisingly still another 15,000 books remain - and that is after quite a cull before the pack-up.    We also gave 50 boxes of books to the Carterton Rotary Book Fair.
 
Many thanks to all those who helped make this Rotary fund raising project such a success.     Many put in hours of sorting and taking loads to the recyclers, managing signage and marketing, handling the sales and provided catering, and packing up and helping with the trays from Plimmerton.   A real team effort. 
 
The crowds kept coming over the four days.

REGIONAL CONFERENCE - Hobart
 
I few of us are planning to attend the Rotary Zone 8 Conference at Hobart in September 2018.
 
Perhaps you'd like to come along with us.   International Rotary Conferences are a great way to learn more about the work of Rotary and how the organisation works.
