NEXT ROTARY MEETING

Tuesday 30th April 6 p.m.

Our next Rotary meeting is on Tuesday 30th April. At this meeting there will be the conclusion of this year's AGM followed by the speaker, Adrienne Murray who is going to update members about the training structure and training opportunities within Rotary.

Adrienne has worked as an HR professional for 28 years and built up an exceptional reputation within New Zealand’s HR community. She has worked internationally, in multi-site organisations and as a consultant to a wide range of organisations from start-ups to mature multi-nationals. She has worked with and for leading New Zealand companies in the financial, science, private and public sectors, including the Tertiary Education Commission, PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Correspondence School, NIWA, the State Services Commission and Johnson & Johnson. In 2006 Adrienne was presented by the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand (HRINZ) with both the coveted HRINZ HR Person of the Year award, and the HRINZ HR Initiative of the Year award for the 2005 year.

Adrienne is a member of the Rotary Club of Plimmerton. Last year she was the District 9940 Bulletin editor, and this year she is the Assistant District Governor for the Wellington 3 cluster which includes the Tawa Club.

Rotary Club of Riccarton - Christchurch donation acknowledgement

Members may recall that about four weeks the Club decided to donate the proceeds of the club sergeant session and raffle to support the Christchurch community through local Rotary representatives. This raised $115 dollars and the Board agreed to add $500 from Club funds. A letter of thanks has recently been received from the Christchurch Rotary Clubs to thank us for this donation. $50,000 has already been provided for the immediate hardship of the families of victims. Club Night - 23 April 2019

At our meeting last Tuesday Phil Harland opened with a reminder of ANZAC Day and our need to remember them with some reminisces of his own war time experiences.

Martin Garcia extended his 3-minute talk to a full speaking slot. Unfortunately our planned speaker could not make it due to a family circumstance.

Martin updated us on his current and previous work experience with MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment). He had previously retired to take up the role of District Governor in 2016 - 2017. But for the past year he has been back working on contract for MBIE. Within MBIE Martin has worked in a team investigating "Trade Remedies". As an example of such a case Martin mentioned the case brought by NZ Steel claiming of dumping of steel imports from China which was recently rejected by MBIE. Such investigations take a long time.

Martin has also undertaken work as a commissioner on a World Trade Organisation hearing panel, which hears and adjudicates on trade disputes brought to the WTO by a member state. Resolving trade disputes is one of the core activities of the WTO.

Martin also updated us on his current work within Rotary. This includes

work on a medical supplies to Timor Leste project
Chair of the District Public Image committee
Secretary of the District Advisory committee
Member of the District Nominating committee
Vice Governor District 9940
Member of the Rotary zone 8 pilot Regional Structure Planning Group
NZ representative on the RAGMS (Rotary Action Group) multiple sclerosis) group
Liaison with Districts on the Rotary NZ & Pacific History Project

Stuff the Trailer with Stuff

A number of Tawa Inner Wheel members were also present for the evening and an announcement was made by Denise and Tawa Inner Wheel president Carolyn Crutch for a new "Stuff the Trailer with Stuff" Collections and BBQ event at Tawa New World and Tawa Countdown on June 8, in conjunction with the Tawa Salvation Army Corp, to restock the Tawa food bank in preparation for winter demand. More details will be provided closer to the time.

Dress a Girl project

Fiona Houghton provided an update on the Dress a Girl project. A project work-bee is being planned to complete some sewing and packing.

Tawa Club Visioning Workshop

Pat spoke about the Visioning Workshop and the summary of results and other comments that he had circulated following this night.

Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. And babies whose mothers die within the first six weeks of their lives are far more likely to die themselves than babies whose mothers survive. As I've travelled around the world as president of Rotary, I've met families for whom these aren't simply tragic statistics. But I've also met people who are devoting themselves to helping mothers and children — and because of them, I'm hopeful. And because many of those people are Rotarians, I'm also proud. April is Maternal and Child Health Month in Rotary, so it's a perfect time to tell you about some things Rotarians are doing that will make you proud too. >>>>
