NEXT ROTARY MEETING

Tuesday 24^th February 6 p.m. - Normal meeting at Tawa Bowling Club

Our speaker on Tuesday is one of our local MPs Greg O'Connor. In the 2017 general election Greg ran for the Labour Party in the Ohariu electorate, and won it with a majority of 1,051, taking over the seat from the then recently retired and long term Ohariu MP Peter Dunne. Greg is a former police officer and represented the Police Association for two decades until he stepped down before the election. In earlier days Greg played rugby for both Tawa and Western Suburbs.

DISTRICT 9940 CONFERENCE – WANGANUI 17, 18, 19 May 2019. Our 2019 District Conference registrations are open and Earlybird registrations end on 28 February. District Assembly training follows immediately at the conclusion of the conference on the Sunday. The theme for our conference is ‘Light My Fire’. That’s what we’re going to do over the weekend of 17-19 May – light a fire in our Rotarians! Ignite passion! Passion not only for doing good in our communities, but passion for continuing the work that Rotary has done and will continue to do to change the world for good - by promoting peace, eliminating disease and supporting the vulnerable and disenfranchised members of our communities. So if you have not been to a Rotary Conference before and want to learn more in depth about the world of Rotary give it a go and attend District Conference in May. Last Week's Meeting - 17 February 2019

Tuesday 17^th February - Tawa Lookout Workbee

Thank you to everyone who turned out to cut and rake up the long grass, cut gorse, tidy the broken fence, remove graffiti, and pickup rubbish and some pruning, at the Tawa Lookout last Tuesday

It was a very enjoyable and successful evening, which made a visible difference to a community facility which Rotary had provided back for the Centenary Anniversary of Rotary in 2003. By the time we left the area was looking much better.

Thanks to all who helped organise the event, Judith for collecting fish and chips, Nada Bakery for the water and bread, the Tawa Fire Brigade team for turning out to mitigate any fire risk, and to WCC for unlocking the gate and removing the three full woolsacks of cut grass.

There will be some ongoing work to continue some pruning to further improve the view from the Lookout.

In my travels over the past year, I've visited many strong, vibrant clubs and districts that are transforming their communities. When I attend their meetings, I can feel the energy. When I meet their members, I can see they are people of action. And when I look at their communities, I can recognize the impact of their work.

I've also visited communities with Rotary clubs that were hardly more than social clubs. It shouldn't ever be that way. Fortunately, there's a simple approach that I believe can help revitalize any club.

I'd like to challenge every Rotary club to come up with at least one high-impact service project. Each club already has the potential, the resources, to make it happen. It has the power to change people's lives — completely.

It doesn't take millions of dollars. One of the most transformational projects I've been a part of involved providing a Jeep to a group of midwives in Haiti. We had asked the midwives what we could do for them, and they told us they needed a way to reach expectant mothers in a remote part of the country. We supplied a Jeep, painted it pink, and put the Rotary logo on it. Three years later, we went back to see how they were doing. They were excited by the outcomes: They told us that the mortality rate for mothers and infants in that region had dropped by 50 percent.

That's what I call transformational service. >>>>
