AGM Conclusion

On this coming Tuesday we will briefly conclude this year's AGM as per the Agenda circulated by Liz.

We will also have as guests some International students visiting Wellington who Gaylene will introduce.

Upcoming Fundraising Events

Judith Gray will be collecting names and payments for the upcoming movie fundraising outing on 5th June. So please consider supporting this outing with a group of friends and family.

Liz Sutton is also seeking further commitments to attend the theatre fundraising outing on 10th August.

Upcoming Working Bees - Saturday 9th June

Also please note the following proposed working-bee outings for Saturday 9th June and schedule your diary for these.

In the morning 10 a.m. - midday the Book Fair trays and tressles are to be transferred from the Plimmerton Rotary lockup. A good turnout please to help unload and position the trays and tressels in the New World Tawa shop. Meet initially at the roll-up door on the norther side of New Work Tawa at 10 a.m.

And in the afternoon from 2 p.m., about 6 people are required to help with next changeover of the Tawa Business Centre hanging flower baskets. We will initially load up from the Fire station and then to Main Road.

British 1st Secretary

On the 14th May Tawa joined with members of the Johnsonville Rotary Club on a windy wet evening at the Johnsonville Club.

The speaker was Joel Watson, 1st Secretary (Political & Economic) at the British High Commission Wellington. Joel enlightened the audience with the role of a 1st Secretary and briefly recounted his diplomatic career.

Joel Watson joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1989. He came to Wellington in 2014 and is the head of the Political and Communications teams at the British High Commission in Wellington.

Joel has previously served overseas in the British High Commissions in Belize, Pakistan and Vanuatu and at the British Embassy in Qatar. He has also worked in London on European Union, International Policy and climate change issues.

During his talk Joel shared some reflections on Brexit and the background that led to this decision, where the process is currently at, and its implication for NZ.

Rotary International Peace Conference

On the 8th May Ian Munro recounted some highlights of the Rotary International Presidents Peace conference that he attended in Sydney during March 2018.

This was one of a series of six Presidential Peace Building Conferences held around the world during the 2017-18 Rotary year and had some 500 attendees. Its purpose was to explore economic and community development as it relates to peace. This meant looking at the underlying causes of conflict: which are seen as poverty, disease, lack of water and food security and lack of education.

The Bookshop movie Fundraiser

We have a movie fundraiser evening planned for Tuesday 5th June. An opportunity to invite family and friends for a fun evening out. 6pm screening at The Lighthouse Pauatahanui. So please try and arrive by 5.45 to allow for seating on time. Tickets are $20pp. Please register here or let Richard Herbert know of number of tickets required.

The movie is The Bookshop, which played in Berlin and was the winner of three Goya awards in Spain. Written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet (Learning to Drive) and based on a Man Booker Prize short-listed novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, the film stars Emily Mortimer (Mary Poppins Returns), Bill Nighy (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Patricia Clarkson (House of Cards).

The Bookshop which is set in a seaside village in England in the 1950’s where a widow (Mortimer) pursues her lifelong dream of opening a bookshop. As she introduces the townsfolk to the world’s best literature and stirs a cultural awakening, her efforts are ruthlessly opposed by a powerful local grand dame (Clarkson) causing a reclusive resident (Nighy) to join the fight to keep the bookshop open.
