Presidents Piece - 18 August 2019

Great All Blacks win last night. The country can now breathe again and look forward with some great new talent in the team for the RWC.

Our own team (that’s all of us) have a busy couple of months coming up so please take some time to reflect on how you can play your part. It’s a privilege to lead a club that is so dynamic and engaged so I am excited about our programme and activities and the projects happening. Below is a list of just some of the activities:

27^th August – Matt Strawbridge from Dyslexia Potential is guest speaker. This session is being opened to the public and we already have some local residents registered to attend from 7pm to listen to Matthew – Contact Judith Gray if you or anyone you know wishes to come. $10/head tea and coffee included.
30^th & 31^st August – Collection for Daffodil Day – if you wish to add your name to the collectors list contact Allister McDonald.
31^st August – assisting with ‘Day for Dads’ BBQ Linden – contact Elizabeth Sutton to offer your help.
Until end of August – previously loved spectacles and bras – being collected by Karyn Walker for donation to the Islands.
5^th September – One Rotary Team going to Inner Wheel Quiz; more participants definitely invited – contact Judith Gray – they are holding 14 tickets for us.
17^th September – our club visit to Downton Abbey (the movie). Please invite friends, family, neighbours to this premiere showing. Contact Elizabeth Sutton for tickets.
Ongoing – help required with collecting books from our container in New World Atrium and storing – contact Pat Waite or Tony Heyward.

And we haven’t even hit our busiest month of October yet. So lots happening in Tawa Rotary Club and isn’t that fantastic.

One project completed – Dress the Children – dresses made by Judith Havill and friends, Shorts, t-shirts, knickers etc. purchased by Fiona Houghton and Elizabeth Sutton, all packed by the team and including Denise Garcia & Lyn Calman and others. Shipped to the Solomon Islands to previous club member Bruce Phillips for local distribution.

Thank you to all these people as well as all of you who keep involved in club and district organisation and ongoing projects. What a great bunch of people you all are.

This week's speaker is Nicola Willis, List MP for Wellington and National Party spokesperson for Youth and Early Childhood Education. And it's on the topic of Early Childhood Education that Nicola is expected to speak.

The Cancer Society is running their annual collection on Friday 30 & Saturday 31 August. They have asked if there are Rotary volunteers that can help out. The collection times on Friday are between 12-7pm (Tawa New World) & 11-5pm (Take Note). Saturday is between 10 - 5pm (New World) & 10-4 pm (Outlet City). Please urgently let Allister know if you would like to assist if you haven't already done so or put your name on the list circulated on Tuesday 13th. https://www.daffodilday.org.nz/

Last Week - 13 August 2019:

Last Tuesday, 13th August, our guest speakers were Les and Catherine Williams of the company Family Heart Limited. Family Heart exists to provide support to families / family members who are vulnerable or in difficulty, in particular where parents are separated or at risk of separating. They also provide life coaching support to individuals who want to move their lives forward. Independent professional educational psychology assessment and support for children is also available.

Les Williams and wife Catherine are co-founders of Family Heart and between them bring a broad and deep wealth of skills, experience and commitment to supporting parents and their families.

Family Heart has the vision for children to live in families where parents, carers, and whanau take care of them, nurture them and ensure of their wellbeing and happiness.

Family Heart sets out to support parents, carers and whanau to make good decisions to support their family, even when they are unable to live together.

While most if their work is funded by the family court, many of the people that are in the greatest need of support are the ones least able to pay for their service. And thus they are also investigating alternative ways to fund support to those families and would be grateful for assistance in spreading the word about the work of Family Heart and ideas for alternative funding streams.

Judith reported that the boxes with the girls' dresses and other clothing destined for the Solomon Islands have finally been uplifted and are on their way which completes our end of this project. Next stop with Bruce Philips in the Solomons.

Mark Carol provided the sergeant session based on a science theme.

In the 3 minute speaker slot Chris Black provided some insight into his recent experience of recreational marijuana 6 years after being legalised in Colorado, USA.

Mark Maloney - President 2019-20

During 2019-2020, I am encouraging Rotarians and Rotaractors to grow Rotary. We must grow our service, we must grow the impact of our projects, but, most importantly, we must grow our membership so that we can achieve more.

Let us try a new approach to membership, one that is more organized and strategic. I am asking every club to form an active membership committee consisting of people of different backgrounds who will look methodically at the leadership of the community.
