Presidents Piece - 03 December 2019

Well what a great day we had “Stuffing the Trailers”. Perfect weather made for a very successful day. Lots of food and supplies for the Tawa Foodbank and over $1300 cash. It was a good community event involving several organisations and having that collaboration is such a great help to everybody. We will plan to do it again in June to top the Foodbank up for the winter months. In effect it means we have doubled the resources and donations from previous years when we just had the one collection with Toot for Tucker.
Measles Outbreak in Samoa. You will all know that Samoa is hard hit by the measles outbreak with well over 30 fatalities – mostly children under 5. Our friends in the Rotary Club of Apia are doing all they can, providing bedding and other support for those affected. We would be doing good service if we can donate our raffle and sergeants taking to that cause as well as a little extra. To that end please read next section …..

Mystery Raffle – Bring a wrapped full bottle with you on Tuesday.
It can be wine or sauce or anything useable / drinkable and we will raffle or auction to raise extra funds to send to help out our colleagues in Samoa.
And please bring some extra coins with you for this endeavour. Goodness knows what you will win!

Lastly A reminder that the Lions Club helped us with Stuff the Trailers so in turn we will be assisting Tawa Lions with marshalling at the Christmas Parade next Saturday 7th December. Please see assembly instructions – report to Mexted Motors showroom by 1.40pm on the day for a safety briefing prior to the start. Please wear the Rotary Hi –Viz vests, either those you have at home or the ones we will bring on the day.

Last Weeks Meeting

Last week District Foundation Chair - Simon Manning gave us a great presentation on the Rotary Foundation

At the last Rotary meeting on 26 Nov 2019 past DG Simon Manning spoke to us as Chair of the District Foundation Committee on the topic of The Rotary Foundation – November being Foundation month in the Rotary calendar.
Simon provided a refreshing plain language explanation of the workings of the Foundation topic which was of interest to both new and seasoned members. He covered an overview of the various elements of Foundation including its origins and history, why it is run so efficiently in comparison to other humanitarian charities, fundraising contributions and donor recognition categories, Paul Harris Awards, District Grants, Global Grants, Peace Scholarships, Polio Plus, and partners like the Bill and Millender Gates Foundation.
With small beginnings in 1917, with an initial donation of just US $26.50, The Foundation is nowadays raising more than $350 million per annum and on target to become a US$2 billion Endowment Fund by 2025. The Foundation is one of the greatest tools we have to create lasting change and allowing us to fund diverse, sustainable service projects all over the world, thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters.

On Friday morning, a small group from Tawa Rotary helped out at Nada Bakery in Tawa , preparing (not eating ) the catering for a very large event - Special Children’s Christmas Party.

Dear Tawa Rotary Club,

I would formally like to thank the team from Tawa Rotary who came to assist us at Nada Bakery in putting together the catering for the Special Children’s Christmas Party. It is a fantastic Wellington community event which we are proud to be associated with.

It is a huge job that we have had the privilege of being involved with for the last 12 years. The help that the Rotary club extended to us this year made the job nice and easy and helped to ensure all involved with the event are well catered for.

President Nominee Process

Rotary Club of Tawa – President Nominee
Recently the Nominating Committee of the Club has met to select a President Nominee for the year 2021-22. This process has been unsuccessful in having the desired outcome. Consequently the Board has decided to open the process up to the whole club and to call for nominations from the floor. This will take place at our AGM which has been notified for December 10th 2019.

Tawa Rotary Progressive Pot Luck Christmas Saturday 14th December 2019

Back by popular demand is the “Pot Luck Progressive Dinner” on Saturday 14th December 2019, from 6.30pm – I hope you will discuss with your social secretary whether this will be ‘the Christmas event’ for you for 2019.
To refresh your memories and as the name suggests, it is pot luck. That means attendees do the cooking and keep us all guessing!
And also ‘progressive’ in the name suggests attendees are on the move, in other words go from house to house.
So to outline the event, there will be three homes for entrees, three homes for mains, and then a central home for desert and coffee.

Rotary Day at the United Nations, which we celebrate each November, is an important reminder of the historic relationship between our organizations. But this year’s event is even more important than usual, because we are building up to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in June 2020.

You might ask, why celebrate this anniversary? For Rotary, it is entirely appropriate, because we played such a critical leadership role in the San Francisco Conference that formed the United Nations in 1945. Throughout World War II, Rotary published materials about the importance of forming such an organization to preserve world peace.
