Remember to set the alarm clocks a little earlier on Wednesday 03 April 2019 for the Tawa Rotary & Tawa Business Group Business Breakfast is starting at 7 am. This is an excellent opportunity for all Tawa Rotarians to connect and network with local business operators and visitors. We will need a good turnout of Rotarians to help with this event. This meeting replaces our normal Tuesday meeting and promises to be very interesting and informative.

Dame Kerry Prendergast DNZM, CNZM is the former Tawa resident and Mayor of Wellington. Kerry is currently Chair of Tourism New Zealand and it's on this topic that she is planning to speak.

So that we can manage attendance numbers, can Tawa Rotarians register early so that we can allocate responsibilities for the morning. Registration and payment details included in the event flyer - copy below.

Family Membership

The board have a family membership option now available to all existing members and new members.

Kevin and Karyn our recent new members have taken advantage of our new family membership package ratified by the Tawa Rotary board.

At the moment the family membership fees can be split in 2 ways. Annual subs are $290 per member. Each additional family member is $160 per extra person.

Each family member will be a full member with full rights and registered with Rotary International.

Put another way, the family option is $290 plus $160 equals $450 total for 2 family members, which can be split to $225 each member. Or for a 3 member family option $203.33 each member ($290 + 160 + 160 = $610 pa)

A member can join up a partner, parent, sibling or adult child.

This family membership is open to all club members so please consider bringing a family member to Tawa Rotary.

Visioning Workshop

Tuesday 16^th April 6 p.m. - Rotary Tawa Visioning Workshop with Pat Waite

Rotary Tawa’s 50^th anniversary is coming up – we are planning now for the continued success of Rotary Tawa. Your thoughts and ideas will enable Rotary Tawa to move progressively forward into our next 50 years, starting very soon.

We need to engage each of you in the question and decision-making processes and visioning for your club. Collaboratively moving forward as one group of committed Rotarians.

Rotary’s legacy for the future is to ensure;

1) Rotary Tawa continues to grow, adapt and serve the needs of existing and new members and

2) Rotary Tawa continues to serve the needs of the community in many diverse ways.

Together we’ll look at Rotary Tawa’s vision and meeting format, the frequency of meetings and more as you suggest ways we can do things better? With any change, we will provide good feedback loops to evaluate how we all are doing. The big Question is “How do you see your Tawa Rotary adapting and changing, being current and engaged over the next year or two? This discussion for members will take place at our visioning workshop on the 16^th April 6pm to 8.30pm run by Pat Waite.

We look forward to seeing you there. We will be giving each member a feeder questionnaire as your thoughts gathered before the workshop will aid Pat in running this workshop. Bring any completed questionnaires to the next meeting on the 9^th April, or drop the into Elizabeth Sutton letterbox by Sunday 14^th April or scan and email it to Pat Waite directly.

Ronald McDonald House Charities - 26 March 2019

At our last meeting on Tuesday 26th March speaker was Tracy Robinson of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is a worldwide charity. In New Zealand RMHC supports a continuum of care and support to families with children having medical treatment across New Zealand. This includes specialised accommodation close to all major hospitals to ensure families are supported in safe, nurturing environments allowing them to focus on their family’s wellbeing and help relieve some of the everyday stresses they face. Each house in run by volunteers who treat visitors like family and they treat the home like their family home.

Across NZ each year there are some 4,300 families hosted in 154 rooms providing 43,200 free night accommodation, the equivalent cost saving to the families of $11 million a year. The criteria for staying at a RMHC home is that the patient needs to be under 21km and live more than 100km from the hospital providing support. They also provide accommodation to support Rotary's ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) programme with patients from the Pacific.

The Club 3-minute speaker was new member Fiona Houghton who told us a little about herself. Fiona grew up in Dannevirke and trained for nursing in Hastings. Moved with family to Wellington a position of charge ward nurse at Wellington Hospital. Now she has the position of Social Director for Wellington Hospital for which her prime role is to ensure that there is good nursing patient care. Her two children are now living and working in London in the fields of tourism and IT. Fiona joined Rotary after living in Tawa for some years but realised that she didn't really know a lot of locals and was also interested in supporting the local community. A project that she is interested in supporting is the supply of children's children clothes for the Solomon Islands.

Ian Munro gave the club members about how the club is using FaceBook to promote the clubs image to the community and spread the word about Rotary's values and projects. You can help by also "liking" the Rotary Club of Tawa FaceBook page and "liking" and sharing to your own "friends" group items posted on the Rotary FaceBook page.

Barry Rassin President 2018-19

One of the things I appreciate most about serving as president of Rotary International is the people I get to meet. Much of my time is spent traveling and visiting Rotary clubs around the world. A Rotarian welcome is something quite special. But let me tell you, there's nothing so warm as the welcomes that have been rolled out for me by Rotaractors. These are young people who are committed to Rotary ideals, who are pouring their hearts into service, and who, in the process, don't forget to have fun.

One of the highlights of my recent travels was a trip to Ghana, where I visited a district that boasts some 60 Rotaract clubs. They aren't satisfied with that number, though — in fact, they're excited about a plan to double it. They'll do it, too.

Rotaractors are vaccinating children against polio. They're donating blood where the supply is dangerously low. They're providing hand washing facilities to schools where children previously had no way to get clean. In short, they're all about transformational service: carrying out projects that make a real difference in their communities. >>>>
