So what do I do when I have club duty?

This reminder will help:

Set-up: Try to be there at 5.30 and help get the room ready for meeting
Greeters: Please arrive by 5.30 to meet and greet members and visitors. Fill in Visitors badges and direct them to a member to host them if possible. Sell raffle tickets.
Starting & Parting Thought: Be ready to go at 6.10
3 Minute Talk: Prepare something of interest, or entertaining. Or both.
Introducer & Thanker: Do some research prior to the evening. Be there by 5.45 if possible to greet guest speaker. You are their host for the evening. Perhaps offer to buy them a drink. Introduce them to members. Host them at dinner.
Sergeant: Prepare a session that will extract money from members through fines or other means.

Presidents Piece - 09 March 2020

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8^th. The day is aimed to help nations worldwide eliminate discrimination against women. It is also focused on women gain full and equal participation in global development. This encompasses gender equality which is recognised as being essential for economies and communities to thrive.

Thankfully Rotary recognised equal opportunities for women over 30 years ago. Women were allowed to join Rotary clubs and their roles have been imperative ever since. I am thankful that in our coming 50^th Anniversary celebration women are being recognised for their own participation and not just as the partners of male Rotarians.

Our upcoming publication for the first 50 years of Tawa Rotary “Creating and Enhancing Communities” recognises the many contributions of all our Tawa Rotarians. It is a compelling read and Im sure all who receive a copy will enjoy reading about the past and seeing the many photos of the activities undertaken.

If you haven’t already registered for the 50^th Anniversary weekend I urge you to do so. It will be a great celebration of, not only our club, but also of the Tawa Community itself.

Any by the way, in the interest of gender equality, International Mens Day is celebrated on November 19^th each year.

The Rotary meeting on Tuesday 24 March has changed to a Car Run on Sunday 22 March 2pm
The run will start from Tawa Junction at 2pm, it will be a directed drive giving you the opportunity to see parts of Wellington you have not seen before.

The Tawa RSA is arranging a group booking to attend the Porirua Little Theatre show of Brassed Off.

This is a theatre version of very popular 1996 movie of the same name and is being performed with support of members from the Trust Porirua City Brass band.

The date/time for the group booking will be Thursday 23rd April, 7.30pm

at the Exhibution Centre at the Elsdon Kennel Club.

The cost will be around $25 - $30 depending upon the number they get for the block booking.

Please let Richard Herbert know if you're interested in being included asap.

The Bulletin – a Change of Frequency

After discussion with the current editor it has been decided to make The Bulletin a fortnightly publication. It takes a great deal of work to find articles of interest and assemble them each week and very often, once it is distributed, the wonder is whether many of the articles are even fully read. People are so busy it seems people take a quick look at the Duty Roster (hopefully) and don’t really take the trouble to read further. So from now you will have a two week period to take the time to read it fully.

On the alternate weeks an email with relevant bullet points for the coming weeks activities will keep you up to date.

Presidential Message March 2020

March is the month we celebrate Rotaract — and this has been quite a year for our young partners in service.

Last spring, the Council on Legislation elevated Rotaract in our constitution: Rotary International is now the association of both Rotary clubs and Rotaract clubs. Then in October, the Rotary Board of Directors eliminated the artificial Rotaract age limit and took other steps to break down barriers that were preventing Rotaract from growing in some parts of the world.

These steps were long overdue, because Rotaract is a vision of what Rotary must become. Not only do we need to open our doors to our young colleagues, but we also have to open our ears and minds to the Rotary experience they find most engaging. That is one of the best ways we will meaningfully grow Rotary.

When I say grow Rotary, I mean it in many ways. We need to grow our service and to grow the impact of our projects. Most importantly, however, we need to grow our membership, so that we can achieve more. Rotaractors provide this opportunity, not only because they can transition to Rotary at the time that is right for them, but also because they understand what it will take to attract others like them.

Business as usual will not work for us anymore. Bringing in more members to replace the ones we lose is not the answer. It is like pouring more water into a bucket full of holes. We need to address the root causes of member loss in many parts of the world: member engagement that is not what it should be, and our member demographic that skews steadily older.

It is time to make some fundamental changes. We already know what the barriers are to an engaged and diverse membership. It is time to act on what we know: creating new membership models, opening new paths to Rotary membership, and building new Rotary and Rotaract clubs where the existing clubs do not meet a current need.
