Presidents Piece - 12 November 2019

I think Tawa Rotary can take our own bit of pride in our Pride of Work Awards last week. It was wonderful to acknowledge workers in our community who don’t necessarily shout about what they do or have roles that make a big splash but they are sometimes the quiet achievers who deserve to be shown we are grateful for their work. The recipients were rightfully happy to be presented with their certificates and to hear their citations. The businesses who nominated them could be pleased that they had the opportunity to thank their staff in this way and our club was rightfully happy to be the organisers of the event. A success all round I’d say.

Thank you again to Don Rushworth who was the main organiser of the awards as part of his Vocation Directorship on the Board. Also thank you also to the others on the Vocation Committee who helped to deliver the event, and also to Pat Waite for organising such an appropriate guest speaker. We had intended having these awards every second year but I am now of the opinion that we build on the success and repeat them annually. Something for the Board to discuss but if there are other opinions please let us know.
Just a reminder to members of Phil Harland's invitation to join him for drinks and an early birthday celebration on Friday 22nd at 5.30pm at Tawa RSA.

This Tuesday night is an internal night where we all have the opportunity to meet within our committee groups and plan the next few months.

There is ample opportunity to have input and discuss fresh new ideas.

This is a relaxed and informal way of sharing information.

Following the meeting is the Tawa Rotary Monthly Board Meeting.

Fundraising Update - Liz Sutton

Fundraising is an important part of our club, this week Liz Sutton has provided an update:

My role as Fundraising Champion, is not as it seems. You may remember our President, Judith Gray, challenged all members of Rotary this year to participate in some form of fundraising, over and above the book fair, and she set a goal of $10,000.00 for that additional amount.
To date just under $1,000 has been raised, at a successful movie evening. I intend to arrange at least 2 if not 3 more movie evenings, but this obviously is not going to reach the $10,000 mark. I also intend arranging a pub quiz evening in April and a car rally in March.

Back by popular demand is the “Pot Luck Progressive Dinner” on Saturday 14th December 2019, from 6.30pm – I hope you will discuss with your social secretary whether this will be ‘the Christmas event’ for you for 2019.
To refresh your memories and as the name suggests, it is pot luck. That means attendees do the cooking and keep us all guessing!
And also ‘progressive’ in the name suggests attendees are on the move, in other words go from house to house.
So to outline the event, there will be three homes for entrees, three homes for mains, and then a central home for desert and coffee.

Rotary Day at the United Nations, which we celebrate each November, is an important reminder of the historic relationship between our organizations. But this year’s event is even more important than usual, because we are building up to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in June 2020.

You might ask, why celebrate this anniversary? For Rotary, it is entirely appropriate, because we played such a critical leadership role in the San Francisco Conference that formed the United Nations in 1945. Throughout World War II, Rotary published materials about the importance of forming such an organization to preserve world peace.
