I cant help but look at the moon this week, when I can see it between the rain clouds, and think of the men who walked on there 50 years ago. Probably, like all of you, I can clearly remember the day. Being dismissed from my 3rd form French lesson and being taken to the school hall to listen to the broadcast. Did we even realise the magnitude of the event? Probably not – just pleased to be out of the clutches of the French teacher, but today I see it as amazing feat and wonder why it almost brought the space race to a standstill since.

HOT NEWS - Rotary Learning Institute 101 - Venue Tawa Fire Station Sunday 04 August 9:30am - 1:30pm

The Board has agreed to sponsor / fund club members attending this fantastic Rotary Programme, what a great opportunity to learn about Rotary and all the opportunities it has to offer, (in TAWA too) for those members wishing to attend please make contact with President Judith. Hurry - I have heard the course is filling fast.

The next course is 18th August in New Plymouth followed by Wairarapa on the 8th of September.

Youth Director Update - Gaylene

IYM…Innovative Young Minds has been held over the two weeks of these school holidays at Silverstream Retreat.
In the last four years the programme has become very popular with young females from year 11 and 12.
167 applied for this programme with only 80 young ladies accepted.

Tawa Rotary had Shelley Laing and Juliana Hennessey attend this week.

Denise, Karyn, Kevin and I met up with them on last Thursday night at Parliament to see how their week was going. Many had their minds blown away with the amount
of options in the STEMM programme that were available. Visits were made to Massey Uni, Vic Uni, Resene Paints,
and many more companies around the Hutt and Wellington region. You will be hearing from these two girls soon at a Rotary meeting.

RYLA 2020 - Keep your thinking caps on for nominations for 2020 RYLA. Details on the programme are bring released shortly.

Last Week:

Main speaker - Bill Day spoke to the Club on the Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital project.

A District project is in the making, Bill talked about the Playscape area and how Rotary across the district can be involved.

A very worthwhile update with lots of information.

We had 31 members at the meeting and the sergeant collected $76.00

Laura Sommer - was the 3 minute speaker and shared her new experience on the use of Facebook for fundraising when she used a Wellington Marathon event for a cause to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation.
Question posed was - What If Rotary got together to fundraise using the marathon for a cause? - There is challenge

Mark Maloney - President 2019-20

I love to travel! I even enjoy the mundane process of getting from here to there. But last year, my wife, Gay, and I had one of those experiences that would strain the optimism of even the most cheerful traveler. We found ourselves with six hours to wait, at an airport where we were not scheduled to be, on a day we had not planned still to be traveling, having woken up that morning at a hotel unknown to us the night before. It was one of those days.

As we waited at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Gay and I took a walk to people watch. We went from one end of the terminal to the other and back, looking at every gate, every destination, every group of people waiting for their flights.
