He is one of New Zealand's top medal winners and 1984 Sportsperson of the Year. He has won 4 Olympic gold medals and a silver, plus 5 World Championship medals for kayaking. He raced singles, doubles and fours, but was most famous as a duo with his doubles partner Paul MacDonald. In 1996 Ian was awarded the Olympian of the Century award by New Zealand's Olympic Association

Ian was awarded the MBE for services to canoeing. He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

Ian had another big dream after seeing the Worlds’ first man made, totally artificial, white water kayaking course at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.  He wanted to have the Worlds’ best artificial course in NZ.  Finally his dream was realised, and NZs’ first white water kayaking course opened at the beginning of 2016. It was not just the most difficult Olympic White Water Kayaking course in the World; it was also available for all New Zealanders to enjoy.  This facility is operating well with over 100 school children through a day, as well as many corporates, emergency services, rafters and the general public.
