A modified vaccine offers hope that eradication is closer than ever
In mid-2017, two groups of 15 strangers lived together for 28 days each in a ring of shipping containers assembled in the parking lot of Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. They had access to books and movies, a small courtyard for barbecues, a common kitchen and dining room, and a fitness room — all of it behind secure interlocking doors and under the watch of personnel in protective gowns.

On all things Book Fair our sales have been mounting and galloping towards the target as I write – and Pat has more items on Trademe as we speak. Thanks to you this has been an amazing experience. A real team effort and ultimately raising funds to be put back into the Tawa community. As before, if you know any worthwhile causes that could use books for resources or fundraising, please let Pat know. Now all we have to do is move the remainder to storage or a skip!
Tuesday evening, we had a busy night at the club with the AGM, our presenter (Martin Garcia) and a Board meeting. The AGM was smooth with all necessary papers received and approved, with clarity provided where provided. A big thank you to John Melville who has kept the books in good order for another year – much appreciated.
Martin shared the purpose of the Rotary Foundation to improve understanding and peace across the world. He considered that as rotarians we are ‘peacemakers’ to get what we need (resources or connections) and avoid conflict locally/internationally. The things we do for our communities through District Grants and Global Grants make real difference examples included: scholarships and Peace Fellowships, Ending Polio (the big kahuna!) orthopaedics in Tonga (Whanganui), Tamariki mental health (Northland), Ending Polio and Giving every Child a Future (Immunizations). Martin also highlighted the relatively new Disaster response grants rounding off with applicability in the Ukraine crisis - Connections are essential and doing is key – service above self!
This week’s raffle was won by Phil Harland – three books with an offer to exchange with three from the bookfair! (along with a Penthouse Cinema voucher!!). Notes from the Board meeting will follow in due course! But needless to say, our finances are in good health, our projects are continuing to develop across the year, a grant for Longview Home (lifting chair) was approved and membership activities continue!
Preparations for the Pride in Work Awards continue (Tuesday 18 Oct) – now looking like we will have over 100 attending! Please register your interest as seating will be at a premium. Also, please pay the meal fee ($30) in advance by internet banking so that we are not handling cash on the night – many thanks.
We have Paul Atkins (Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand – Te Aparangi) coming to talk on Tuesday 25 October, please invite your family and friends!!!!!
Finally, Melbourne Cup evening 1 November (Plimmerton Club): the invitation is attached, please let Paul Drummond know if you are looking to attend by 25 October – he will collate names and numbers for them.

It’s awesome to see we have 17 nominations for the Pride in WorkAwards from businesses across Tawa. This has been a great team effort getting many great nominations.
Rotarians, please remember we will have many guests at this meeting and to remember to extend our normal hospitality and ensure our guests are introduced to Rotarians at your table.
Liz Koh is our guest speaker at the Pride in Work Awards. Liz has a Master’s degree in Economics. She is a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Accountant and Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors. She is actively involved in local community affairs on the Kapiti Coast, where she has recently been elected as a Councillor, and has interests in philanthropy, economic development and genealogy. Liz has been a member of Kapiti Rotary for more than two decades and is currently an Area Governor for the Coast Network.
We will have 81 outside Rotary guests for the evening.

Denise and Elizabeth together with Sharleen Peters and 2 of her colleagues, Denise and Judith had a working bee sewing more book bags for neonatal unit. Thankyou Lyn Calman for gorgeous fabrics and also for organising Tawa Rotary iron on labels.
The District AGM will be held, as last year, by Zoom at 10.00am on Sunday 20th November. The Quorum for this meeting will be 21 Clubs represented by Officers or a Member holding a Proxy vote (details on Proxy voting will be circulated in late October).
The District Conference will start on the evening of Friday 17 March 2023, and continue through Saturday 18th and Sunday 18th March at Southwards Car Museum.
A reminder that RYLA will take place from 25-29 January 2023 and applicants are being sought. Please consider whether you can identify a young person between the ages of 18-24 who shows leadership promise and would benefit from the encouragement and self-development that this intensive leadership programme offers. I've agonised over whether or not to share this with you all, and eventually decided you could ignore it if you weren't interested. So, please feel free to do that.
Most of you know about my daughter Lauren and her medical complexity. One element of her care which has been difficult to manage and fund is transporting her, and our two aging cars are at the end of their lives. This Give-a-little page, set up by a friend, is hoping to make transport a bit easier.
None of us are on crazy big salaries, and I want you to know I don't expect donations, but I'd really appreciate it if you would consider sharing this on your social networks, or emailing to friends who could be interested.
