At Rotary, we are deeply concerned by the escalating loss of life and humanitarian hardship caused by the war in Ukraine. We’re using our deep networks and decades of experience to take swift action in the region.

 

 

You will notice there is not a formal Bulletin this week, just this ‘email’ update – that’s because our lovely Tony Heyward is galivanting over the ditch in OZ! He is in fact spending significant time and effort on Rotary and the regionalisation project that we will all hear more about next week.

 

It was great to have her Worship Anita Baker, Mayor of Porirua, talk on Tuesday to hear of the myriad of activities and projects that she is involved in as Mayor. She clearly has a focus on doing what is right, having a view, seeking collaboration where possible and ensuring that the community she serves is cared for. In her presentation she covered an array of topics from Three Waters to roading infrastructure, the environment, Covid and the challenging impact that social media can have on those in the public eye. Thank you, Anita, for an informative, insightful, and entertaining evening.

 

Also, thanks to our wonderful Tawa New World for the raffle prize this week, an amazing meat pack, won by Richard Hutchison who I believe will be setting a date for a BBQ ……..in 2030 he suggested!

 

In terms of Rotary activities, a small team is meeting with the City Council local park ranger this week to progress the discussions on the labyrinth and the tidy up of the Tawa lookout.

Richard Herbert has organised a tree planting event on Sunday 14 August with Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves and members of Port Nicholson Rotary Club and maybe some of their Interact members between 1 and 4pm at Woodburn Reserve, access from 66A Bing Lucas Drive.  Please contact Richard directly if you would like to get involved, bring your gumboots and a spade and family members - the more the merrier!   This is a wonderful way to introduce the "ENVIRONMENT"  focus area to Rotary Tawa.   

Access is via a private driveway on Bing Lucas Drive (64-72) and residents would prefer if people would park on Bing Lucas Drive and walk up the drive until you see the reserve access sign.  Warning! this is a rather hilly site and probably doesn't suit people who may have poor mobility or fitness. The long-range forecast for the day is currently looking good for the 14th - but as we know the situation can change rapidly and a confirming advice and reminder will be sent on the Rotary member WhatsApp group the day before.  Unfortunately, Richard is actually booked himself out of town that day and the contact on the day will be FOTBR member Andrew Lily 021 027 83927, or Port Nicholson Rotary member Lisa King 021 265 6220. 

Monday morning (8 August) alongside Porirua and Plimmerton Rotary clubs we are supporting the Primary School Leadership Awards day starting at 9am with setup, hosted at Elim Church in Porirua. There will be over 400 guests and it’s an amazing opportunity to celebrate those children who have demonstrated leadership, giving above self and being role models – Denise Garcia is looking for volunteers to help – please let Denise know if you can help (even at the last minute!) and be there at 9am!

With the ‘Imagine Rotary’ theme this year we have got the new banner in production underway that will be well used through the range of events we have planned across the year.

 

For those that managed, hope you enjoyed the Sprig and Fern on Sunday, the next social for members and friends is Sunday 4 September at 4pm – hope to see you there!

 

On Tuesday evening have District Governor Elect, Wayne Gordon coming to talk about the regionalisation project – a new way of approaching club sustainability and governance across our Zone. I am very pleased we will be joined by several local clubs – Karori, Johnsonville and Mt Victoria. I am sure we will give them a great Tawa welcome! It’s a big and exciting change, and ultimately, I will be asked to vote on behalf of you the members if we want this to go ahead. So please come along and ‘get in the know’.

 

The car rally is later this month (Sunday 28 August) and a flier is attached from John M with more details for you to register your interest.

After a series of setbacks due to COVID and engine availability we are pleased to advise that Ride the Train to End Polio is take place on Sunday 4 September 2022 (Fathers Day) departing Paekakariki at 7.50am to Taihape return.

 

The train will be stopping at Levin, Palmerston North and Marton, and people can join at those locations. The cost is $160 per person, and bookings can be made through Event Pronto,  the link is as follows:

 

We will provide regular newsletters to those that have booked, including a timetable, and events. A commemorative one-off T-shirt is being finalised, and we will provide details on this and how it can be ordered shortly.

 

This is a great opportunity to promote the work of Rotary, and have a trip on a steam train, so please spread the word amongst friends and relatives so that they can have the opportunity to take part.
