NOTICES:

This Tuesday 4th September our main speaker will be Tracey Richardson from the Tawa Residents Association who is the leader of the Spring into Tawa festival event and will be talking about that project for this year and how the event has grown over the years.

Also speaking will be our RYE student Olivia Goodridge who will formally introduce herself to the Tawa Rotary Club.

A reminder for the next couple weeks. As a number of members are away the following arrangements apply:

Tuesday 11th September meeting people need to register their interest in an informal dinner get-together at The Roundabout by contacting Malcolm Andrews 232 5922. Each person to pay their on dinner costs on the night.
Wednesday 18th September please register your interest in attending Inner Wheel evening with speaker Young Cricket Player Amelia Kerr, by contacting Paul Drummond 232 4402. The cost is $25 including dinner. As a consequence there will be no regular Rotary meeting on the Tuesday 17th.

Another Inner Wheel quiz night is coming up - who's keen ? See under Events for details. Hoping Rotary Tawa will enter a team as we did last year. Great prizes to be won. Denise has pencilled in 1 team - should we have 2 teams? Please let Denise know if you are keen?

Project Night - 28 Aug 2018

Last Tuesday 28th August we held a Club Project discussion evening.

Member Malcolm Sparrow provided the Club 3-minute talk. Over the years of editing the Tawa News newsletter Malcolm have interviewed numerous people with a prescribed set of questions about their lives in his series "2 minutes with ...". Judith Gray led a discussion about rosters and the 3-minute speakers, the starting and parting thought, and the upcoming schedule. The 3-minute speaker may choose a topic of their choice that may be of interest to members, and over the year there has been a great variety with some insightful topics at times. Members should consider this a personal development exercise, which with practice becomes easier each time. If you really do not wish to be included in this roster then please let Judith know, although the more that withdraw means the more frequently the rest will need to be rostered. There was general agreement on the starting and parting thought. The full future schedule can be found from the Bulletin by clicking on the Full List in the Speaker or Events sidebar item. Ideas for future speakers and events are welcome and should be referred to Denise or Judith.

Densie led a discussion in table groups on the topics of :

Spring into Tawa Stall - It was confirmed that we would hold a stall. Could sell a few books and CDs. Advertise some of local community groups we support - e.g. Foster Hope and MenzShed. Advertise upcoming projects - e.g. Toot 4 tucker. Display the ERK kit. Have a raffle.

Duck Race - We discussed the feasibility of such a project in conjunction with the Christmas festival at Tawa School after the Christmas parade.

Book fair Review - The July school holidays seemed to be a suitable time of year, although needed to co-ordinate dates with other district clubs. The current format of two weekends seemed to work well. The success of the Book fair is considerably dependent on the availability of the New World Tawa mall empty shop. A roster of member help was required for setup beforehand and during opening hours. Involve students and Rotaractors and others that we have sponsored. Pat Waite and Tony Heyward are to be the joint leaders for the 2019 Book Fair.

Imagine if we could take a snapshot capturing all of the work Rotary does on a given day. No one – except Rotarians – would believe that a single organization was capable of accomplishing so much. In that snapshot you would see dedicated volunteers working to eradicate polio, setting up microloans, providing clean water, mentoring youth, and countless other actions.

We can do all this thanks both to our geographic reach and to the fact that our clubs are made up of people who are engaged in their communities. As a part of the community that you serve, you know the needs, you have the connections, and you're able to take immediate action. That's why every Rotary club's membership should reflect the diversity of its community.
