What a week its been – the awful weather and circulating viruses and bugs meant that the games night was cancelled as we were all hunkering down and trying to stay warm! We will have another sometime during the year so that your competitive streaks can shine….
On Thursday late afternoon Pat and I managed to have some time with 40 amazing one women that attended the Innovative Young Minds (IYM) residential programme. These inspiring young women have the potential to be the next generation of leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. And boy were they confident, articulate and wise for their age. The event was hosted by Dr Alisha Verrall MP at the Grand Hall in Parliament. I had some time with Trishina, our sponsored young lady, who has a real interest in computer science. We are encouraging her to come along and talk at a future meeting!
On the projects we have underway, Pat has kept himself busy this week (not that this is surprising). If you would like to get involved or bring some friends that would be interested, please contact Pat directly.
Bookfair – we are still planning for October but finding somewhere to hold it at is the challenge. Enquiries are underway with a possible venue that looks promising. More information in the next week or so. Meantime can anyone help in collecting books as we are receiving enquiries of where to donate them too.
Tawa Lookout – a Centennial Project for Tawa Rotary, led by Phil Harland, which all members were in involved in building in 2005 and in partnership with WCC planting the area around the lookout. Sadly, the plants have taken over and are blocking the amazing views of Tawa and they need cut back. A project for when the weather improves. We are approaching WCC for help but also possibly the Tawa College student army. A project leader is needed to pick up this project – if you are interested?
Wilf Mexted Reserve – this was a project that the Club has supported for years – it was one of my first projects to help at when I joined Tawa Rotary in 1994. A new sign is needed, and the Club has agreed to provide funding in partnership with WCC. Richard Herbert is leading this project.
Peace Labyrinth – we have identified a possible site, and we are seeking advice from WCC on what is required to get approval for the site and seeking design and budget information from the United Church in Johnsonville who have built a Peace Labyrinth next to their church. If anyone have a contact at that church – please let Pat Waite know.
Spring into Tawa – a booth has been booked but the Club needs to decide what and who they wish to support, promote or fundraise for. Any ideas or thoughts welcomes
This Tuesday, 19 July, we have Dame Kerry Prendergast visiting the club to tell us about her amazing walk (the Te Araroa Trail). If you have any friends or neighbours you would like to invite along that would be great!
