Rotary responds to earthquake that has devastated areas of Turkey and Syria

Turkey and Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake on 6 February that has killed tens of thousands of people, destroyed thousands of homes and other structures, and left people across the region without shelter in bitterly cold winter weather.

The Rotary world responded to this catastrophe immediately. RI President Jennifer Jones activated our disaster response efforts, communicated with the affected districts, and encouraged governors in those regions to apply for disaster response grants and share information about their relief efforts so that Rotary can amplify the calls for support.

President Joe - Update
Kia Ora fellow Rotarians
I hope that you have had a good week. I want to acknowledge the terrible events in the Hawkes Bay and my thoughts are with you who have whanau or friends living in a very challenging environment.

This Tuesday we had DG Marylin Stevens and District Secretary Adrian Gregory along with Mark Anderson from RI Sydney Office. Each had a chance to share. DG Marylin shared some of the amazing work that has been done withing and through Rotary, nationally and internationally on development and humanitarian efforts making a difference to communities and individuals (Pacific Islands, Ukraine and Colombia). She emphasised the reputation the organisation has and how proud we should be of it. Adrian about the foundational aspects of Mana Tangata, the opportunities and how the ‘club’ operates and has been operating over the past 7 months. He described the chapters, their activities and their membership. Effectively chapters have functional autonomy. He is looking to do an evaluation of the experience to date to feedback to RI.

Finally, Mark talked about the changing landscape when it comes to donations to the Rotary Foundation and the benefits that flow from contributing to the Foundation as members and communities. It was exciting to hear that this year (so far) there have been no cases of polio identified!

Just because we are good to our guests! Mark from RI Sydney won the raffle (a voucher from Sprig and Fern) that he will have to use quickly before he sets off back across the ditch – I don’t think Sprig and Fern deliver long-distance!

At the Board meeting (notes will follow in due course) we updated and covered off a number of issues including: the Peace Labyrinth, upcoming fundraising and promotional events, governance and Presidency for the club after June, funding applications, support for flooding in the Hawkes Bay ($2000 donation) and revisions to the remaining club programme for the year.

President 2023/24
As there have been no applicants for Presidents, five of our former Presidents have been discussing options for 2023/24 and have made a recommendation to the Board that four each take a 3-month ‘tour of duty’ to govern the club and meet its obligations under the Incorporated Societies Act and to the Charities Commission. As the way this has been reviewed aligns with our constitution, the recommendation has been approved by the Board and from 1 July 2023, the schedule will be:

Term
President
1 July - 30 September 2022
Judith Gray
1 October - 31 December 2022
Pat Waite
1 January - 31 March 2023
Tony Heyward
1 April - 30 June 2023
Laura Sommer

Other upcoming activities include:
28 February: NO MEETING
17-19 March: District Conference at Southward Car Museum – REGISTRATIONS OPEN NOW!
21 March: Prof Michael Baker coming to speak on Covid and NZ’s response – spread the word as it would be good to have a packed room at 7pm on the night!

Keep well
Nga mihi nui

Action Plan

As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
More than a century ago, we pioneered a new model of service leadership grounded in person-to-person connections. Today, those connections are a network that spans the globe—bridging cultural, linguistic, generational, and geographic barriers—and shares the vision of a better world. As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
