THIS WEEKS EVENTS
NOTICES:

On Tuesday 2nd October, we have as speaker Krystal Crimmins. Krystal is a young woman of Karori who has had to learn how to cope with her own epilepsy.   She found people in general had a lot of misinformation about what to do when someone has an epileptic episode so she has developed an easy book on Epilepsy First Aid to increase the public knowledge about what to do when someone is confronted by a child or adult having an epileptic episode.   Epilepsy First Aid is all about creating awareness around the common seizure types and signs and symptoms alongside the current first aid.   Epilepsy is the most common Neurological condition and growing.   Also note that November is Epilepsy Awareness Month.

Stroke Awareness Day is also coming up next Saturday, 10am - 2pm.  Rotary Tawa need a few volunteers to help on the roster for assisting with note taking as the medical people take blood pressure for members of the public at New World Tawa.   Contact Denise.

Keep the night free on Tuesday, 16th October.   Meet the 9940 District Governor as she shares our Tawa Rotary  World's Greatest Meal fun night.
Bring partners and family - for a great night of fun and food!
Judith has organised a Paella Chef to be on site and a Spanish flavour to the night.
This will be the Tawa Rotary - World's Greatest Meal fundraising night for POLIO, and also celebrating World Polio Day (24th October).

Simon Woolf
Our speaker on Tuesday 25th September was Simon Woolf, photographer and Wellington City Councillor.
In his role on Wellington City Council Simon is also a member of the Long-term and Annual Plan Committee, and chair of the Council Controlled Organisations Subcommittee.  As Portfolio leader Simon has responsibilities as Wellington Ambassador Tourism, Small Business (joint), Sport, and is the Alternate Councillor Representative on the Youth Council.

Simon gave us an overview of how he came as a reluctant Councillor initially.  Now in his second term, after 83 years of experience and baggage left at the last election, he was much happier in his role as Councillor.    He has been seeking for a system of qualified mediation rather than litigation on local government and was more of a backroom person he never sought the limelight of the media.   Especially enjoys his City Ambassador role as he gets to show visitors to Wellington around Wellington.   His main interests were in the youth and the senior citizens.   Simon said that our Youth Council is best practice, and provides power to the youth to unleash them.   Youth are not just for the future they are for the now.   In relation to aged persons, Simon mentioned that they had so much experienced that is underutilised, often taken for granted and seen as not useful.

Simon responded to questions on a various transport issues, and local government being a-political.

In earlier days Simon was a football referee and still has an interest in this, but his main interest is in his photography business, Woolf Photography, which was originally started when his father bought in 1960 an established studio in Wellington.    Photography as an occupation, art form and passion is something very special to Simon.   He has a particular interest in nature and wild life photography and is enamoured with the Wellington harbour and Wellington south coast area.   He also continues to have an interest in portraits and baby photos, and photography as art, with an interest in the expression of movement.   Photos showed to the meeting included shots of the great white heron (kotuku), NZ falcon (kārearea) which he described as very intelligent, whales in the harbour, Winston Peters, and his most viewed photograph is of Kate and George.
In response to questions Simon said that he was a fully digital camera photographer, with most of his art taken as from the camera.   He also does quite an amount of his photography from a smartphone camera.   The only modifiers he sometimes uses were, Google Snapseed and Next photographers plug-in.

Presidential Message October 2018

President 2018-19 Barry Rassin

Barry Rassin President 2018-19

Every Thursday morning, I receive an email from the World Health Organization with an update on the status of polio eradication.   It contains a wealth of information, country by country:   where and how immunization campaigns are being conducted, how many millions of children are being vaccinated, and where environmental surveillance has found evidence of circulating virus.   But every week, when that email appears in my inbox, my heart seems to stop for just a moment until I read the first few lines – and learn whether a child was paralyzed by wild poliovirus that week.

That, my friends, is where we are today in the work of polio eradication.   The question on my mind as I open that message isn't how many thousands of cases we might see in a year, as we did not too long ago, or even how many hundreds.   Instead, when that WHO email arrives every Thursday, the single, binary question it answers is: Was there a new case this week, or wasn't there?
