Rotary responds to earthquake that has devastated areas of Turkey and Syria

Turkey and Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake on 6 February that has killed tens of thousands of people, destroyed thousands of homes and other structures, and left people across the region without shelter in bitterly cold winter weather.

The Rotary world responded to this catastrophe immediately. RI President Jennifer Jones activated our disaster response efforts, communicated with the affected districts, and encouraged governors in those regions to apply for disaster response grants and share information about their relief efforts so that Rotary can amplify the calls for support.

President Joe - Update
Kia ora fellow Rotarians

I would like to start this note by acknowledging the sad passing of Don Shanks and John Connolly who have both been pillars for the club and Rotary for many years. I know that many attended Johns funeral before Christmas and that many will be attending for Don on 23 February. Also Michael Fagg who was a well known Rotarian passed on Waitangi Day.

Tuesday evening broke the mould a bit – there was heaps of chat and socialising and as a result, acknowledging our guest speaker, we abandoned the Presidents table turning 6 tables into one! Against this backdrop, Tony Heyward shared with us his thoughts on membership and the changing landscape that we find ourselves in.

He began the session describing his role as an Area Rotary Co-Ordinator, looking after 3 Districts, (9910/20/30) helping them grow membership, and the Regionalisation Pilot. He celebrated the fact that Rotary is well placed to face change talking of the 1.184 million members we have and the 18,000 new members that have joined us in this current year.

He highlighted the significant resources available to assist clubs (like ours) change and be fit for the future (part of which will be participation in the regionalisation pilot).  He recognised the difficulties we face in the club and challenged us to face up to these – focusing on the needs of new Rotary members while respecting the past foundations that have built us to where we are today in the community.

He drew our attention to the 4 key area of interest for the Regionalisation project as an example of opportunity: reducing duplication, increasing support, improving impact and increasing retention. This was followed by a solid discussion on the opportunities and challenges faced. I am sure the Board, members and Tony will have much more to say about this critical issue for us all.

After this we had a light interlude where Judith won the raffle a voucher from the Village Bakery. Thanks guys - and well done Judith.

Here are a few key diary dates:
14 February: NO MEETING
25 February: Clearing shrubs and bushes at Tawa lookout – Richard will share details in due course
5 March: family Concert in the Park – all club members will be needed to help with various tasks, Elizabeth looking for volunteers or you might find you are voluntold! (Please note – no social at Sprig and Fern that day as we will all be at the concert!)
21 March: Prof Michael Baker coming to speak on Covid and NZ’s response – spread the word as it would be good to have a packed room at 7pm on the night!

Keep well!
Nga mihi nui
Joe

Notices and Events

NOTICES:

Highlights from Board Meeting 31 January 2023:

  1. Family Concert in the Park (5 March).  The Board thanked Elizabeth and her Committee for the work that has taken place in arranging this event.  Hiring the stage will cost $6,000 and applications are being made to funding organisations that may be able to assist. The project will need the support of all Club members.
  1. Peace Labyrinth at Coronation Park  – Pat has obtained the provisional approval from Wellington City Council, subject to approval by existing park users, Scouts, Kindergarten and Community Garden.  Estimates for concrete curbing are being sought.
  1. Assistance to Tawa College – Rotary has developed a resource “Lifting the Lid” focused on Youth Suicide. Further details to be obtained as it may be of interest to Tawa College.  Judith mentioned that many ticket holders to the Building Hope lunch that had to be cancelled, were happy that their contribution go towards other Youth Suicide initiatives, and so approximately $11,000 could be used to fund the “Lifting the Lid” resource  if the College considered it suitable.
President Elect 2023/24 – No nominations received to date.  Pat will approach Past Presidents to see if there was any interest in them assuming the role of President for a second term from 1 July 2023.
Family Concert in the Park:

Sunday, March 5 the club will be hosting a free late afternoon picnic concert at the Grasslees Reserve featuring the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band. It will include their Concert Band playing music from the Americas (everything from Hollywood hits to South American rhythms) and their Jive Bombers covers playing a selection of hits ranging from Stevie Wonder to Dua Lipa. Both bands will feature vocalists Barbara Graham and Stephanie Paris.

There will also be a performance by a kapa haka group and a college musical group, yet to be arranged.

This is a whole-of-club event like the Book Fair so members can expect to be rostered for a range of duties from set up, and concert management, to cleaning up and clearing out.

Elizabeth will provide further information as the planning progresses.

Action Plan

As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
More than a century ago, we pioneered a new model of service leadership grounded in person-to-person connections. Today, those connections are a network that spans the globe—bridging cultural, linguistic, generational, and geographic barriers—and shares the vision of a better world. As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan.
