Kia ora fellow Rotarians
I would like to start this note by acknowledging the sad passing of Don Shanks and John Connolly who have both been pillars for the club and Rotary for many years. I know that many attended Johns funeral before Christmas and that many will be attending for Don on 23 February. Also Michael Fagg who was a well known Rotarian passed on Waitangi Day.
Tuesday evening broke the mould a bit – there was heaps of chat and socialising and as a result, acknowledging our guest speaker, we abandoned the Presidents table turning 6 tables into one! Against this backdrop, Tony Heyward shared with us his thoughts on membership and the changing landscape that we find ourselves in.
He began the session describing his role as an Area Rotary Co-Ordinator, looking after 3 Districts, (9910/20/30) helping them grow membership, and the Regionalisation Pilot. He celebrated the fact that Rotary is well placed to face change talking of the 1.184 million members we have and the 18,000 new members that have joined us in this current year.
He highlighted the significant resources available to assist clubs (like ours) change and be fit for the future (part of which will be participation in the regionalisation pilot). He recognised the difficulties we face in the club and challenged us to face up to these – focusing on the needs of new Rotary members while respecting the past foundations that have built us to where we are today in the community.
He drew our attention to the 4 key area of interest for the Regionalisation project as an example of opportunity: reducing duplication, increasing support, improving impact and increasing retention. This was followed by a solid discussion on the opportunities and challenges faced. I am sure the Board, members and Tony will have much more to say about this critical issue for us all.
After this we had a light interlude where Judith won the raffle a voucher from the Village Bakery. Thanks guys - and well done Judith.
Here are a few key diary dates:
14 February: NO MEETING
25 February: Clearing shrubs and bushes at Tawa lookout – Richard will share details in due course
5 March: family Concert in the Park – all club members will be needed to help with various tasks, Elizabeth looking for volunteers or you might find you are voluntold! (Please note – no social at Sprig and Fern that day as we will all be at the concert!)
21 March: Prof Michael Baker coming to speak on Covid and NZ’s response – spread the word as it would be good to have a packed room at 7pm on the night!
Keep well!
