It was great to see everyone’s faces on Tuesday night and feel a little bit more ‘normal’ with a standard night at Rotary, with an interesting speaker in Lisa Beighton from the Porirua Club.
It’s been a busy week for some of our Rotarians as well, getting out in the public and doing some good.
Wednesday Liz, John and I presented Tawa College with 200 disposable masks for the students. Liz took the initiative to talk with Murray Lucas who advised he’d been receiving calls from parents concerned about the cost of providing masks for their children, so he was very appreciative of the gesture. We will be looking at other ways to support the college with masks going forward.
Thursday, Richard Herbert and I, along with Inner Wheel attended the handing over of the vouchers that were converted from cash donations at the last Stuff the Trailers event to the Salvation Army for the food bank. This is a popular event, well led by Richard Herbert this year and is well supported by our Tawa community. The next event is currently planned for nearer Xmas.
Friday, Martin Garcia and I attended Porirua College to donate 2000 masks as part of the 1 Million Masks initiative, which is seeing Rotary joining with Lanaco to provide 1 million masks across the country. The masks are reusable, and NZ made, with a wool filter and compliant to N95 standards – Lanaco is the company that made the masks for our Olympians and recently donated 75,000 masks to Fiji. The thing I really like about the masks is that they fit snuggly and don’t fog up my glasses! This initiative is getting great publicity for Rotary, and some of you may have seen the articles on Stuff, in the Weekend newspaper, or on Breakfast TV, where Adrienne Murray was interviewed. Tawa Rotary along with other clubs in our Networks has contributed $500 towards those masks.
Monday night we start our sewing, so for those interested, pls bring your sewing machines and scissors to Frances Burros’ house for 7pm start.
This week’s meeting will be a working be at Free For All, 6-8pm, 2 Auty Lane, Porirua. With a Fish & Chip dinner. We’ll be helping them get the shop sorted for their re-opening in a week or so, So possibly some painting, and definitely moving of stock, to try and make some order of everything that has been moved from the old stock, or donated over the past month while they haven’t had the shop open. There’s plenty of parking, so we’ll see you there.
The meeting the following week will be something special a presentation by Air Marshall Sir Bruce Ferguson on “The Return of the Unknown Warrior”. Bruce was asked by Prime Minister Helen Clark to undertake the planning and execution of this project. He went to France and escorted the remains of a soldier from an unmarked grave in rural France. A major ceremonial military funeral was held in Wellington and the casket paraded through the streets of the Capital to be laid at rest at the newly developed site in front of the Carillion in Buckle Street.
This will be a longer presentation than normal – about 45 mins, and is expected to be very emotional. We’ve also extended invites to Tawa Lions, the RSA and Porirua Club.

In the latest District newsletter there was the item (extracted below) highlighting ZOOM workshops aimed at up-skilling members on aspects of Rotary.
During the past month there have also been a number of zoom tutorials to help familiarise members how to access and navigate the Rotary Learning Centre where there is a huge array of courses available to help members with their roles in Rotary and a range of personal development courses also. I have attended a couple of these sessions and found them very useful as an icebreaker to get members introduced to the Rotary Learning Centre. These zoom sessions on various topics are planned to continue on a monthly schedule.

Rotary National Science and Technology Forum 2022 – 2 students interested in applying
RYPEN 2022 - Applications have opened for this event to be held from 25-27 March 2022. This year we had no applicants. Hoping for 2 applicants to sponsor at $302 each
RYLA 2022 - Applications for this have opened. We had expressions of interest at the youth meeting earlier in the year and to date 1 application has been submitted. The cost of this sponsorship is $995, and we are looking at sponsoring 1 person

Guyana Rotary club brings COVID-19 vaccines to remote communities
Members of the Rotary Club of Demerara, Guyana, are using their decades of experience in fighting disease while delivering COVID-19 vaccines and aid to a remote region of the South American country.

In 5 weeks, the Interact club will be executing a carnival at our school. The aim is to raise money for BeyondWater - an organisation that looks at providing clean drinking water and sanitation facilities for schools in Kenya. We were wondering whether Rotary has any connections with people or companies that would be willing to sponsor us, including Rotary? We are needing donations for 3 prize packages. Students will be paying for tickets and trying their luck at different carnival games. If they are successful, rather than having single prizes we give them an entry into the draw to win one of 3 prize packages.

Call for additional volunteers to support a new pilot programme in Tawa.
Over lockdown volunteers from the Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust saw a need for a greater connection between generations and have initiated a project called Generation Link.
Generation Link aims to connect the seniors of our communities with local tamariki in school, during school hours. Hampton Hill School Tawa are excited to be part of our Generation Link Pilot Program. We are looking for Volunteers who would like to be involved with the project and are able to offer 2 hours of their Wednesday afternoon to take part in facilitated activities with the senior children from Hampton Hill School. Tawa Rotary will soon be inviting nominations for a Pride in Work Award from Tawa employers who have outstanding performers in their employment.
This is the 2nd year that the Awards have been available for nominations in this format. In earlier years the Club held Pride in Workmanship Awards but after a number of years not being held it was reintroduced as Pride in Work Award by Don Rushworth in 2019.
After the Book Fair, the Club will start to promote the Awards with employers and the community. Nominations will close on 20 September and Awards will be presented at a dinner on Tuesday 19th October.
The Committee of Judith Gray and Pat Waite would welcome volunteers to help both distribute information around employers and also in the planning of the Award evening.
