Rotary statement on recent polio detections in U.S., Europe
The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York, USA, and isolates in several environmental samples collected in London are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.

Thanks to all who were there on Tuesday night it was great to have us all together in a semi-formal evening over some fish, sausage and chips, with Bread and sauce – yum! On the evening, Trinisha Patel (with her dad AJ) our Innovative Young Mind (IYM) candidate shared her experiences of the week she had with other and the sort of things they got up to. She built a robot, visited Callaghan Institute, Victoria University, FNZ (a financial institution) as well as parliament. As a result of the programme, she is now interested in space science (….as in rockets and the moon!) great to hear it was impactful for her.
Congratulations to Russell Smith who won the raffle on the night and a voucher from the Village Bakery – much appreciated!
Next week we have our own Phil Harland sharing his reflections on the end of WWII and will have a display of memorabilia for us to peruse. If not attending, you know what to do! Being the first of the month next week, there will be the usual gathering at the Sprig and Fern at 4pm…bring a friend!
As a club we held a brief discussion on the RI proposal to establish a pilot in Zone 8 to address membership, public image, communication, leadership and fundraising challenges to help define a more sustainable future for Rotary. By show of hands there was a unanimous vote in favour of establishing a pilot. This will now work its way through the system, and we will be advised of the outcome in due course.

Tawa Rotary Bookfair 8-16 October: We are sorting books in Elizabeth’s garage pending moving into Tawa Scout Hall next Thursday. Volunteers are welcome to help clear books from the donation box in Tawa Mall and then come and help sort the books. They are pouring in!!!!!! You will notice signs are now up on the streets in Tawa and Johnsonville and closer to the time we will have signs at the Railway stations. On the day we will have further signs on the streets around Tawa. Tony Heyward is organizing rosters for the trading days. PLEASE put your name down. Every hour helps! Radio promotion will start early the first week in October.
The Tawa Rotary & Tawa Business Group Pride in Work Awards on Tuesday 18 October – mark your diary! With almost 20 nominations so far and several businesses booking large tables for their staff to come and support the recipients we ask that all club members come along to make it really special. We have Liz Koh, current AG and Rotary Vocational expert as keynote speaker. This will be our biggest event (apart from the Bookfair) of the year and we want to showcase a vibrant and community orientated club to all attendees.

The District AGM will be held, as last year, by Zoom at 10.00am on Sunday 20th November. The Quorum for this meeting will be 21 Clubs represented by Officers or a Member holding a Proxy vote (details on Proxy voting will be circulated in late October).
The District Conference will start on the evening of Friday 17 March 2023, at Nga Manu Nature Reserve in Waikanae, and continue through Saturday 18th and Sunday 18th March at Southwards Car Museum.

Most of you know about my daughter Lauren and her medical complexity. One element of her care which has been difficult to manage and fund is transporting her, and our two aging cars are at the end of their lives. This Give-a-little page, set up by a friend, is hoping to make transport a bit easier.
None of us are on crazy big salaries, and I want you to know I don't expect donations, but I'd really appreciate it if you would consider sharing this on your social networks, or emailing to friends who could be interested.
