Hope you’re all staying warm and dry!!

This week Denise Garcia and I will be joining with Plimmerton Rotary to celebrate the young leaders in our community at the 7^th annual Primary School Leadership Awards.

Tawa/Linden has students from several schools represented.

This Tuesday sees a small number of us heading to Pauatahanui’s Lighthouse theatre from 5.45 to celebrate the completion of Te Ara Piko, with a viewing of the video of the project followed by a movie as part of Plimmerton Rotary’s fundraising efforts.

Wednesday, I will be attending a function at Parliament

COVID vaccination volunteers.

Call for Volunteers to assist with COVID-19 vaccination roll out.

As additional vaccine supplies become available CCH DHB are ramping up their three large COVID vaccination clinics located in Porirua, Kapiti and Lower Hutt.

Wellington Hospitals Foundation is coordinating the supply of volunteers to support people during their visits to local community COVID vaccination clinics – and they need your help.

If you are a friendly, outgoing and helpful person and would like to assist people during their visit to a COVID clinic in a discreet and respectful way, they would love to hear from you!

They are looking for people that are available for 3-4 hours, once a week on a regular roster.

Elsewhere around the world Rotary has been active in assisting with the COVID vaccine rollout. Now this opportunity has come to New Zealand.

We have asked Greg to address on the following topics:

Financial support of the Mongrel Mob ( Greg, we know your strong views on gangs and fully support those views !!)

He Paupau – there is a lack of understanding of this proposal and deep concern regarding it’s adoption which already appears to have started, before any consultation has commenced.

The Police Ministers’s statement of the 20th July that she sees her role as supporting Maori and Pasifika peoples – from comments I have gathered todate the majority believe that her role is to support the Police.

This will be a great evening to get an update from Greg, we encourage you to bring guests and spread the word that Greg is speaking.

Last Weeks Meeting 03 August 2021

Rotary Meeting 3 August 2021 (Thanks Paul D for the notes)

Last week our Guest Speaker was – Jackson Lacy

Jackson is a member of the Tawa Community Board and is currently studying Maori Resource Management at Victoria University. Next year Jackson intends to begin a Masters Degree in Indigenous Studies at Victoria.

Jackson provided an overview of Matariki and the significance to Maori. There are six stars in the Matariki cluster and Jackson explained the significance of each. Each Iwi has a slightly different perspective of Matariki and each star. The rise of Matariki signifies the start of the Maori New Year and is a time of celebration and a time for future planning – not just for Maori, but for all peoples of the Pacific.

New Zealand will have its first public holiday next year to celebrate Matariki. Matariki follows the lunar calendar rather than the European calendar and therefore the dates change each year. A Maori academic has scheduled the Matariki dates for the next 30 years.

Jackson undertook to send through links to the Club for those wishing to increase their knowledge of Matariki.

Charity Ball will be held at The Boat Shed on Taranaki Street Wharf in Wellington at 7.30 pm on Saturday 11 September.

Tawa Rotary is running this fundraiser in aid of a Breast Milk Bank. Members can obtain tickets from Denise Garcia at $45 each or $450 for a table of 12.

Generation Link programme.

Call for additional volunteers to support a new pilot programme in Tawa.

Over lockdown volunteers from the Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust saw a need for a greater connection between generations and have initiated a project called Generation Link.

Generation Link aims to connect the seniors of our communities with local tamariki in school, during school hours. Hampton Hill School Tawa are excited to be part of our Generation Link Pilot Program. We are looking for Volunteers who would like to be involved with the project and are able to offer 2 hours of their Wednesday afternoon to take part in facilitated activities with the senior children from Hampton Hill School.

Pride in Work Awards 2021

Pride in Work Awards 2021

Tawa Rotary will soon be inviting nominations for a Pride in Work Award from Tawa employers who have outstanding performers in their employment.

This is the 2^nd year that the Awards have been available for nominations in this format. In earlier years the Club held Pride in Workmanship Awards but after a number of years not being held it was reintroduced as Pride in Work Award by Don Rushworth in 2019.

After the Book Fair, the Club will start to promote the Awards with employers and the community. Nominations will close on 20 September and Awards will be presented at a dinner on Tuesday 19^th October.

The Committee of Judith Gray and Pat Waite would welcome volunteers to help both distribute information around employers and also in the planning of the Award evening.
