Well after a shaky start (bleeping alarms, sound systems and the need for pizza!) we got through the meeting on Tuesday with a good turnout given the challenges of Covid and flu.
It was a privilege to hear from our International President, Jennifer Jones, who talked about her focus, reminding us of the power of connection – and that here, now, today we can connect in Tawa to change our community. This has a foundation of inclusiveness and growth. My challenge to you is to share our programme and bring someone new along to our meetings so that we can do more!
The Board meeting was full covering a variety of opportunities and issues (Paul will be sharing some notes soon). It was great to have some members present to contribute to the discussion. Broadly, we considered how best we use our available communication platforms , projects that are underway – including work on signage at the Wilf Mexted reserve, planning for Spring into Tawa, the bookfair, bookbags and the like. From this a couple of project groups have been kicked off looking at growing membership and our communications/media use. Pride in Work Awards have been worked on by Judith and Pat alongside the Tawa Business Group for our October event. The categories being broadened to include both volunteers and employees. We will share more information as these projects and other ideas unfold.
Tawa’s contribution to the Wellington Children’s Hospital continues with Judith Gray being appointed as Chair of the Children’s Health Trust that will continue to raise funds for equipment to support children in need. The work on the building supported by Rotary through the $500k raised is coming to completion with murals being painted, final fit out etc. Judith said it looks ‘amazing’.
The Board agreed that for our ‘social’ evenings there would be no charge for attendance, this may be reviewed at the next Board Meeting, but we would still run a raffle on each evening. Importantly there will be no food on the evening and it will start at 6.30pm to allow members time for dinner at home. Our first social is this Tuesday when we will bring out the games again – bring your competitive edge! with tea/biscuits to keep us going through the evening.
On which, a very big thank you to New World for sponsoring last week’s prize (a Masterchef bag of treats) won by Phil Harland who will be cooking up a tasty dish no doubt!
On Tuesday 19 August we have Dame Kerry Prendergast talking to the club on her numerous experiences and challenges walking the Te Araroa Trail.
Covering 3000km from Cape Reinga in the North to Bluff in the South – tell your friends and neighbours!
Pat Waite is compiling a list of projects and plans for the year (bookfair, wilf mexted reserve, Pride in Work awards, literacy project etc.) if you would like to help or indeed invite friends (who are not Rotarians) to get involved drop Pat a note.
Board Meeting 5 July 2022 - highlights
- The Board agreed to form a Communications Committee to co-ordinate messages.
- Representatives of Tawa Rotary to meet with new Tawa College Principal on 27 July.
- Plans are in place for the Pride in Work awards (presentations to be on 18 October).
- Seeking project leads for Spring into Tawa (29 October) and Party in the Plaza (3 December)
- Searching for alternative vacant space to enable a Book Fair to be held in October.
- Looking to update our membership brochure and establish a working group to look at growing membership
- Finalising details for a Movie evening 28 August and Quiz Night 4 October.
