Tawa Christmas Parade and community carols. Tawa Lions have asked for our traditional support for the Tawa Christmas parade on Saturday 1st December, 2pm. Please meet at Mexted Motors by 1.40pm for a briefing prior to the commencement of the parade - finished by 2.45pm.
Later that day from 4.30pm - 8pm, the Tawa Community Christmas Carols Festival is being held at Tawa School, organised by the Tawa Home and School group and Tawa Residents Association.
Toot 4 Tucker. A full turnout is requested for our annual Toot 4 Tucker event to help replenish the Tawa Food Bank for Christmas demand. Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th December, 6pm to 8pm, for this event. Meet by 5.30pm at the Tawa Fire Station for each evenings briefing. Allister MacDonald and Laura Sommer are co-ordinating this project this year. Please reply to Allister's email today, about volunteer tasks.

Jonathan Lemalu with Virtuoso Strings This event is on at the The Opera House, 111 - 113 Manners Street, Wellington, Monday 3 December 2018, 7:30pm – 9:30pm. Virtuoso Strings are bringing the Grammy-Award-winning Samoan opera star Jonathan Lemalu all the way from the UK for one concert only! Jonathan will sing well-known arias by Bach, Mozart, Bellini, some Copland songs, and finishing with some lighter songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein. A rare chance to hear one of the best singers ever to come out of New Zealand!
Also hear the incredible talent of the Virtuoso Strings, including one student, Toloa Faraimo, will be performing Vaughan Williams' beautiful piece "The Lark Ascending" as part of the concert.
Last Tuesday, on 20th November, we heard from our outbound RYE student Jordyn Mumby giving her presentation "Kiwiana and Me" of her country talk before she heads to Canada for 2019. Jordyn mentioned some of her highlights of NZ and Wellington, including mention of the world's smallest dolphin, the hector dolphin, and largest insect, the weta. Tawa was known for its Tawa Music Festival, the Bucket Tree, and has 8 churches, 10 parks and 10 schools. Jordyn then told a little about herself and family. She wished to become an English teacher and was very interested in photography. In 2019 Jordyn travels to Canada to be hosted in the Prince Edward Island town of Summerside which is a similar size to Tawa.

During General Business, Tony first acknowledged the milestone reached by member Russel Smith celebrating his 80th birthday and 48 years' service, and a number of speakers spoke about membership and member engagement.
RYE inbound students update. The District 9940 RYE inbound students from throughout the district are currently on their South Island tour and being accompanied by members Gaylene Lines and Liz Sutton. Olivia recently celebrated her 18th birthday.
Tawa Hanging baskets refresh. Many thanks to those who helped yesterday on Saturday 24th November with the changeover of the Tawa business centre hanging baskets - they are looking great again in time for the Tawa Christmas Parade. And a special thanks also to ITM Tawa and Brian Frampton for the use of their truck for this project.
Life Education Trust (Wellington North) 25 years’ celebration. Last week Richard and Margaret represented Rotary Tawa at the Life Education Trust (Wellington North) end of year function and 25 years’ celebration. At this he made a presentation of Rotary Tawa's contribution to the Life Ed Life Education Trust (Wellington North) from this year's book fair.

One early June, more than 30 years ago, I had a business trip scheduled to Las Vegas. I had been a Rotarian for about six years, and I thought of myself as an active member: I attended every meeting, I’d served as club secretary, I knew everyone in my club. But for me, Rotary was very much a community organization. It connected me to Nassau and perhaps even to the Bahamas — but no farther.
I had never given much thought to Rotary beyond the Bahamas, and it had never crossed my mind to travel to a Rotary convention. But that spring, I realized that my trip to Las Vegas would coincide with the Rotary International Convention and thought, why not? I sent in my registration and paid my fees, never suspecting that the experience would change my life.
