Thanks for responding to Allister’s call for Rotary volunteers for this week’s Toot4Tucker Foodbank appeal. This is a major Rotary community project involving Tawa service and business organisations to collect non-perishable food and donations for Foodbank, particularly as there’s high demand for Foodbank supplies over Christmas and New Year.
Timing: All collectors and drivers are asked to be at the Tawa Fire Station by 5.30pm for briefing. We aim to leave there by 6pm to start collection and are due to finish by 8pm latest.
The briefing is to cover health and safety requirements and to assign volunteers to the teams. We expect to have four teams: each team assigned a Fire truck; a pilot vehicle at the lead, and tail-end vehicle; a van or truck for the food; and collectors are transported in some vehicles.
Thursday celebration: At the end of the Thursday collection (8pm), all participants will be invited to join in a ‘thank you for helping’ celebration (sausage sizzle and cash bar at Tawa Fire Service).
Health & Safety :
No people will be travelling in the back of utes or open trucks this year.
Drivers will be briefed accordingly; with a nominated passenger in each vehicle to look out for collectors, and ensure goods are loaded and organised while the vehicle is stationary.
Drivers are responsible for taking a roll tally for passengers in their vehicle to ensure they return with the same people to the Fire Station at the end of the collection.
Collectors are asked to wear high viz vests (e.g. bike jackets) if available. We will have our limited stock of Tawa Rotary high viz vests for distribution to collectors.
Weather: Either texts or email advice will be sent by 3pm on the collection day if cancelled due to bad weather.
Publicity: Thanks to Ian who has posted on Tawa Rotary’s Facebook that’s been shared with other local support such as through Vibrant Tawa. Posters have also been distributed for local business to display. OneAgency has installed 3 road signs at sites approved by the Council.
Attached is a copy of a flier that you may wish to share wider. Fliers have been distributed in Woodman Drive (thanks Paul Drummond) and in Redwood Village to raise awareness.
Response to question about collection areas: It's difficult to give a specific time for each street as it depends on traffic, people donating, etc. But as a guideline it will be 6-8pm Tuesday for west side of valley (rail line being the centre) and Thursday for the east side. We stop at 8pm regardless of where we are because of the noise we make. If you're missed, donations can be left at the Salvation Army shop. We can pick up clearly labelled donations by your letterbox.

Last Tuesday, 27th November, our speaker was Reece Dixon, currently a tour guide at Weta Workshop. But Reece is also a jewellery artist and chainmail expert.
Reece has been making chainmail jewellery and armour for over a decade now. As jewellery, for Jack Gohan Design, and for film with Weta Workshop for the last six years. Reece worked extensively on chainmail and costume armour components for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. It all started after a battle and the need for better armour was the result and, lacking a forge at that time, chainmail was the answer. In time fighting took a back seat and creating new and beautiful things took over and jewellery, blacksmithing, knife making and learning the old and sometimes forgotten ways of doing things became a passion. A variety of mad projects and crazy ideas come out of his jewellery company alias Jack Gohan Design, http://www.jackgohandesign.co.nz. Reece handed around samples of his chainmail suit and this chainmail inspired jewellery example.
As this was the last formal evening of the year, our grateful thanks and a small Christmas gift was also presented to our faithful supporters; the Tawa Bowling Club bar crew, and our caterers from Fine Cuisine.

It's traditional that the first Rotarian magazine of the Rotary year carries a profile of the incoming RI president and his or her family. I've always read those profiles with interest, never giving much thought to the possibility that one day, I might be the one bringing a writer from the magazine to my Rotary club meeting! I have never liked a lot of attention, and the idea of having my picture on the magazine cover made me a bit uncomfortable. But when I saw the photo the editors chose, I smiled. Because the star of that picture definitely isn't me, or even my wife, Esther. It's the flock of flamingos, none of which could care less about Rotary, all strutting past us in the same direction. All of them — except one.
