Rotary statement on recent polio detections in U.S., Europe
The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York, USA, and isolates in several environmental samples collected in London are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.

A full Club Working bee is planned for Tuesday night 04 October 6PM at the Scouts Hall in Oxford Street, more details next week - This will enable us to be fully set up for the opening morning on Saturday 08th October 2022

Thanks to all who were present on Tuesday to listen to and support our own Phil Harland who shared reflections and experiences of his life during and at the end and after WWII. It was truly humbling to hear what he has done to serve his country and communities he has lived in since his early years in England – he even has Queen Elizabeth call him her ‘trusted and beloved Phil Harland’ Thank you Phil, and for bringing in all your memorabilia that helped us visualise and follow your story. I believe Phil has been invited to Longview home to do the same - awesome!
On things awesome, the movie night has raised approximately $700 for local schools and Elizabeth won the raffle prize from our local Sprig and Fern! - That reminds me that for those who were at the Sprig and Fern on Sunday, hope you had a good yarn.
We were honoured this week to have Brian (Bowling Club President) man the bar this week at the last minute! – many thanks Blair really appreciated!!
Next week there is no club meeting but there is a working bee at the Scout Hall to sort books in advance of the fair that are flooding in! kick off is at 6.30pm (no meals on the evening). Looking forward to seeing you there. Also, we need volunteers to cover bookfair shifts across the week 8-16 October. For weekdays contact Gaylene, weekends Tony H and they will include you in the roster. Thanks to all who were able to help with book sorting and moving on Friday and the weekend.
Opportunity – driving support
I had a call from a lovely lady Lily who was referred from the local CAB. She is currently taking driving lessons from A1 to get her restricted licence. She would like someone to help her practice driving in between my lessons and lives in Linden/Tawa. She doesn’t have a car to practice with but is willing to pay $40 for a practice session, and provide fuel vouchers, for petrol. Her contact details are (04) 2324486 or mobile: 0274393849.
On Youth, this year we had two young people who were interested in taking part in the STEMM programme in January. Unfortunately, neither ultimately applied. The RYLA programme is now out and we actively looking for a candidate. One of the challenges is rising costs and will be presenting alternative options to the Board so that young people in Tawa don’t miss out.
The District AGM will be held, as last year, by Zoom at 10.00am on Sunday 20th November. The Quorum for this meeting will be 21 Clubs represented by Officers or a Member holding a Proxy vote (details on Proxy voting will be circulated in late October).
The District Conference will start on the evening of Friday 17 March 2023, at Nga Manu Nature Reserve in Waikanae, and continue through Saturday 18th and Sunday 18th March at Southwards Car Museum.
A reminder that RYLA will take place from 25-29 January 2023 and applicants are being sought. Please consider whether you can identify a young person between the ages of 18-24 who shows leadership promise and would benefit from the encouragement and self-development that this intensive leadership programme offers. I've agonised over whether or not to share this with you all, and eventually decided you could ignore it if you weren't interested. So, please feel free to do that.
Most of you know about my daughter Lauren and her medical complexity. One element of her care which has been difficult to manage and fund is transporting her, and our two aging cars are at the end of their lives. This Give-a-little page, set up by a friend, is hoping to make transport a bit easier.
None of us are on crazy big salaries, and I want you to know I don't expect donations, but I'd really appreciate it if you would consider sharing this on your social networks, or emailing to friends who could be interested.
