Over the past weekend 6 couples from the Tawa Club attended the District 9940 Conference this year held in Wanganui, the home of District Governor Marian Johnston. The theme of the conference was "Light My Fire". Details of the programme and speakers can be found in the full programme here - https://rotary9940.org/page/conference2019-programme On Friday evening we were entertained with a superb performance of the Pātea Maori Club including many original members. We heard from inspirational and confronting speakers about working with Maori gangs and working with Maori from the inside, the Wanganui River as a person, the Wellington Children's Hospital Project, Immunisation, and the work of a Rotary Peach Fellow in the Cambodian war crimes court, prison reform, and from polio survivors. We heard about some inspirational Rotary projects; the Matipo Community Garden and Education Centre, and the Busy Park QE2 bush reserve. The RYE students featured often in the conference with the introduction and thanking of speakers and well as telling of their own experiences during their exchange. The Tawa contingent and other's that joined us preparing for the Saturday evenings dinner. Incoming DG elect John Mohi gave us an insight into the theme for his year 2019-2020, Rotary Connects the World, which asks Rotarians to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World, building the connections that allow talented, thoughtful, and generous people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service. Reserve the date for next years District conference, 1-3 May 2020, to be held at the newly renovated Lower Hutt Events Centre. . It was an awesome night by all though. We do have a trophy for the winner too. There will be no business on the night just gossip, laughter and competitiveness unless you would like to give some notices, then the floor is open.
