This month the Rotary Club of Chincha is scheduled to unveil a new addition to a shelter that houses vulnerable girls ages 5 to 17 in the Ica region. The girls, some of whom have been abandoned by their families or are victims of abuse, “need a lot of psychological help,” says Mónica Avilés Calderón, a past club president. The club completed the first building, with a capacity of 30 residents, in 2000. Soon the number of girls living in the shelter more than doubled.

Today has been the concert in the park – as I write this, I hope the sun shone and we are packed to the gunnels! And I hope you enjoyed the whole experience. Many thanks to Elizabeth and the team for the huge effort to get this up and delivered.
It was much more taxing and demanding than was ever envisaged and next year we will need to kick off the planning much earlier.

Items of Interest from Board Meeting 21 February 2023
Donation to Tawa College - The Club holds funds totalling $11,278 raised from the “Building Hope” lunch that was cancelled. Many ticketholders agreed that the organisers should keep the proceeds from ticket sales and donate this money for the cause of preventing Youth Suicides in the local area. Tawa College Principal Andrew Savage to be asked to speak at Club Meeting 18 April to explain the various Youth programmes offered at Tawa College, and discuss the donation of Building hope ticket sales to an appropriate programme.
Fundraising Proceeds - Some time ago it was agreed that the Club could take an “Administration Fee” from the proceeds of the Book Fair prior to passing the net profit to the Charitable Trust. Agreed that a fee of around 10% is appropriate to apply to the profit from some fundraising projects. Also agreed that the Board needs to recognise that net profit from fundraising activities go the causes advertised at the time of the event. Net profit should be transferred to the Charitable Trust at the conclusion of each fundraising project.
Concert in the Park – Elizabeth provided an update on the activities planned for the day. A Grant of $1500 has been approved by the Tawa Community Board to help offset the cost of hiring the stage, and a donation of $650 from Mexted Motors is also likely.
Peace Labyrinth – The three existing users of Coronation Park (Scouts, Community Garden and Kindergarten) have all agreed to the use of Coronation Park for the proposed Labyrinth. Pat and Gaylene are getting quotes for concrete kerbing and lime for base before presenting to the Board and then going back to the Council for approval.
Michael Baker guest speaker 21 March – agreed to investigate using the Tawa Community Centre rather than the bowling club.
Neo Natal Literacy Project – Denise has submitted an application for $2,500 to fund the project for 12 months. Grants committee will meet to consider the application.
Charitable Trust – Board noted that Tony Heyward has been elected Chairman, replacing the late Don Shanks. President Joe has appointed Judith Gray as a new Trustee of the Charitable Trust.
Fundraising – Board agreed to start planning for a Bookfair in the school holidays 23 September to 8 October. Last year’s venue (Scout Den) is available again this year.
Youth – Gaylene is seeking applicants for the RYPEN programme to be held in Inglewood 17-19 March.
Donation for Flood Victims – agreed to donate $2,000 to the Fundraising initiative organised by Rotary (RNZWCS).
