Last Tuesday, 13th November, our speaker was Yvette McKelvie, Sergeant, NZ Police, speaking on the subject of Community Policing in North Wellington.
Yvette initially told us a little about her background in policing and her current role. After a period on the front line and in intelligence, Yvette selected community policing and is currently based with the Community policing team at the Waitangirua depot, although manages community policing team across the Kapi-Mana police district. Community Policing is mostly a prevention role understanding the underlying causes and needs and issues. Community policing also includes family violence. Kapi-Mana is an interesting district involving 3 Councils and a wide diversity of people from high achievers to high needs.
Yvette then described for us in some detail the "Our Business" 10-year plan for NZ Police. The outline poster for this which Yvette displayed and talked about, but probably wasn't readable from a distance, can be downloaded from http://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/our-business.
Don Rushworth presented the three-minute talk on the subject of his work with middleware.
Gaylene brought with her three RYE students currently hosted in other parts of the district, and they each briefly introduced themselves. The inbound 9940 RYE team will shortly commence their South Island tour and as Olivia will have her birthday while away during this tour the club presented her with and early birthday cake to celebrate the occasion.
A highlight of the evening was also the induction into the club by Denise of new member Fiona Houghton. Fiona is a nursing manager for Capital and Coast Health DHB. Say hi to Fiona and make her feel welcome.
