Last Tuesday, 6th November, was Melbourne Cup day, and our annual get together with Plimmerton Rotary Club at the Mana Boat Club.
The evening started with an early gathering to organise the sweepstakes in time for the 5pm race viewing.
Fellowship and dinner followed, and then Michael Fagg our learned polio expert led us in a searching quiz on polio matters. Raffles were drawn and prizes announced on the best ladies fascinator hat and the best dressed gentleman, and of course you had to be dressed fitting for Flemington race course, nothing less than a full suit of course. None other than our very own Paul Drummond and Trish complete with Melbourne Cup souvenir lapel pins turned up trumps. Proceeds were assigned to the polio fund.

Armistice Day Service. On Sunday 11 November some of us attended the Armistice Day Service event at the Tawa Memorial in Grasslees Reserve, Tawa, arranged in conjunction with the Tawa RSA and the Tawa Historical Society. The service was led by Rev Digby Wilkinson, Chaplain to the Tawa RSA and Anglican Vicar of Tawa, with Bruce Murray as MC. The service commemorated the centenary of the coming into force of the Armistice which concluded the hostilities of World War 1. During this service a plaque was unveiled and dedicated which records that, 100 years later, residents of Tawa gathered for this service of remembrance. The stone upon which this this plaque rests also holds a plaque for an earlier 75th anniversary recognition, and was recently relocated by WCC to Grasslees Reserve Memorial corner, at the instigation and ongoing championship of member Phil Harland.

Diwali Day Event. And earlier in the week Diwali Day, officially on Wednesday 7th November, was celebrated with Porirua Club with a dinner at the Whitby Taj. Traditional Bingo was held before dinner and raffles held. Punjabi curry and dessert followed. Proceeds were assigned to polio fund.
